This book of marvelous photographs features an introduction by Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt of the PBS program, Kratt's Creatures. It was developed by an organization called SHAKTI for Children, and a portion of all proceeds are donated to the Global Fund for Children. The beautiful full-color photographs were contributed by Peace Corps volunteers and show images of youngsters from all over the world. They are engaged in everyday activities such as playing, going to school, hanging out with friends and family, and so forth. Every image portrays children as happy and active, and the text stresses the universal humanity that lies beneath our differences. A map near the front shows all of the countries represented in the book: Canada, Bolivia, Madagascar, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, Poland, and Mozambique. Additional information, again focused on our commonality as a global community, is offered on the final two or three pages. The entire book is nicely edited and laid out. Maya Ajmera is the creator and spokesperson for Children from Australia to Zimbabwe: A Photographic Journey Around the World (Charlesbridge, 1997) and co-author of the global education guide, Raising Children to Become Caring Contributors to the World. Maya is the founder and executive director of SHAKTI for Children. In the January 1999 issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Maya was named among "A new guard of non-profit leaders...that will shape the charity world in the next century."

Maya is also the co-author of To Be a Kid (Charlesbridge, 1999) and Extraordinary Girls (Charlesbridge, 1999), both brilliantly photographed books that present a picture of global diversity, tolerance, and joy. To Be a Kid is delightful!

I found this book to be a real delight. The thrust of the bookconcerns the idea that kids are kids no matter where they live. The pictures, of children all over the world doing similar things (playing ball, caring for animals, and more), are joyous and luminous. The text is so simple that my five-year-old could read most of it by herself. Each picture is labeled with the name of the country in which it was taken, and my daughter enjoyed matching the pictures with the map in the front of the book. This is a display of multiculturalism that avoids being either sappy or politically correct.

James Henry Trotter, a poor orphan, is being raised by two horrible aunts. Magic crystals change his humdrum existence, and soon he is off on a great adventure on a giant peach with new friends who are, to say the least, unique. There are sharks, seagulls, and irate cloud people to add interest along the way and, of course, Dahl's irreverent poetry. The story has always been a crowd-pleaser, and Jeremy Irons does more than read the story-he performs it. Each character has a unique voice, aptly suiting each personality, and Irons tells the story with humor and energy. Fans of Dahl will not be disappointed in this briskly paced tale that is a delight from beginning to end.

Roald Dahl is a genius!

I think that Roald Dahl is probably the greatest children's author of the 20th century. He's three things that I'm always wanted to be. An Author, a genius, and Norwegian. I'm only one of the three :-) I'll let you guess which ones. Anyway, what a marvelous read and reminder that if life gives you giant peaches make chocolate cake and leave them wondering how you did it!

My daughter loves Roald Dahl books. We first read The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I ordered this book and it arrived quickly. My kids loved this book. It's a bit dark like his other novels but it made them laugh. James is such a sweet character. My daughter really liked the bug friends that accompany James on his journey. They were quirky but lovable.

Like the Peach, this book is huge for children

As a volunteer reader to school children, I'm always searching for stories that hold their interest. JAMES and the GIANT PEACH is just the book to grab the little peoples' minds and promote the shining upturned faces that every storyteller loves to see. As James and his larger-than-life insect friends ride a wayward giant peach through many heartstopping adventures, I always sense that each listening child has latched onto the insect with characteristics most similar to their own self image and rides with it, relishing each inventive way their bug contributes to the well-being of all the others. In fact, in my post reading conversation with the students, I ask what insect was the favorite. Each child has a different answer and reason for their selection. It's fascinating to hear each little person describe his or her choice.

Mr. Dahl wrote many children's books before his death in 1990, and each of them is a masterpiece of invention, excitement, humor, and scariness that children love to experience. In my opinion, JAMES and the GIANT PEACH, his first children's book after a decade and a half of writing adult stories, is the most appealing, never failing to capture the attention of young listeners and filling their minds with wondrous images.

Valuable Book and Videos Despite Initial Inconvenience

I have enjoyed and profited from every Deke McClelland book/video package I have picked up. I think one of the primary reasons I have learned so much from them is that McClelland has mastered the tool he loves to the point where he can confidently ridicule and excoriate Adobe for the anti-user experience interface decisions they foist on us. It is profoundly reassuring and encouraging, when looking at a criminally obtuse dialog, to be told by an expert that no, you are not stupid, it is the dialog that is stupid.

If anyone is thinking I am exaggerating for dramatic effect, they can take a peek at the Bridge "Save to Hard Drive." This utility is composed of a huge, yet mostly empty, two-tabbed dialog that quite conveniently automates conversion of files to JPG format without even once communicating that it has anything to do with JPGs. (!) As the author begins "Why did they make the program vast and complicated with redundant options, misleading commands, and downright ritualistically obscure functions...?"

This is precisely why you don't want to enter the Photoshop swamp without an expert guide!

The author makes a workflow suggestion that has worked well for me:
1) Read the introduction of a chapter
2) View the video
3) Return to the book to follow the lesson (always different from the video example)

Perhaps as a cost-cutting measure, O'Reilly does not include a disc with the book. The video and lesson files must be downloaded from the companion site. This was no fun. We are talking about 1.2 gigs spread across several clumsily named (chapter number out of synch with lesson number) zip files. Given the size of the downloads, it would have been good for O'Reilly to have considered separating the Windows from the Mac files so that we ALL would not have to download both formats.

But once you get into the lessons, the initial aggravation is quickly forgotten.

Great Book on PhotoShop CS5

Alot of buzz has been going on with the latest version of Photoshop. There is lots new to learn and most of the time I dont have the time to really review new tools and what they have to offer. I needed a book to guide me through visually all the new features in a way that someone that is not a graphic designer could understand.

This is the book for me.

Author Deke McClelland , has done an outstanding job of writing a book that walks you through Photoshop just as if he was teaching you in a classroom or in a corporate consulting environment.

McClelland, begins by showing you how to open an image on screen; use the improved Adobe Bridge to preview and organize you digital images; determine how a photograph was captured, add copyright information and keywords; and, rename multiple images in one fell swoop. Next, the author explores ways to crop, straighten, and resize digital photographs using a small, but essential collection of tools and commands.

Then, he shows you how to select a region of an image; and, how to edit it independently of another region using Photoshop's magic wand, quick selection , lasso, and marquee tools; as well as, a few commands in the Select menu. The author continues by explaining how to use Photoshop's paint, edit, and healing tools to brush color and effects onto an image.

Next, he examines the amazing power of using Photoshop layers to isolate and manipulate parts of your image. Then, he shows you how to control, adjust, and manipulate color and luminosity in your images. The author continues by explaining the intricacies of Photoshop's most useful filters and how to use smart objects to apply effects nondestructively.

Next, he shows you how to use Photoshop's distortion tools to bend, bloat, nip, tuck, squish, and reposition the subjects of your images. Then, the author examines the Photoshop tools and features that are of particular use to professional photographers or serious amateurs who want professional results.

He continues by showing you the world of masking, starting with automated techniques and then moving on to calculations and defining precision masks via the pen tool. Next, the author shows you how to use Photoshop's text and shape tools; as well as, ways to edit text and shapes by applying formatting attributes and transformations.

This most excellent book contains a few techniques that even the experienced Photoshoppers don't know.

A great book that everyone from novices to experienced designers can learn from, a great buy!

The book has a lot of useless jargon. You are just to tired of Deke trying to promote [...]. It is being mentioned constantly at each chapter, enough all ready. The videos don't really match the chapters all the time. The book does give you a good description on how to do things in CS5 but sometimes you have to read on to get the point. The author points to an example but you have to continue reading another page to understand the reasoning behind it. That can be confusing. He could be a little more concise in his explanations. Also, I think it would be good to have more retouching examples done with CS5. Overall a good book but not great.

Who will find the golden egg?

Cousin Wally has come for a visit and his favorite phrase is "Last one in is a rotten egg!" Gilbert and Lola take him to the Easter Egg hunt after lunch. There is going to be a prize for the most eggs collected and also one for the golden egg. Lola finds the golden egg in a tree but cannot reach it. Gilbert tries to help her but is also too short so they ask Wally for assistance. Imagine their surprise when Wally claims the golden egg for himself?!

Gilbert, though, has wised up to Wally and shouts out "Last one down is a rotten egg!" Wally sets off running thus losing ALL of his eggs from his basket in order to get to the bottom first. What will Gilbert do when he receives the prize for the most eggs even though Wally originally had the most?

This book has a great storyline. Wally is selfish and somewhat rude to begin with. However by the end of the story, Wally has learned his lesson. Please note, that if you do not like the word 'stupid' then it is used one time in this book by Wally when he first hears about the Easter egg hunt.

How does Dawn put up with these kids? I coulden't!

Yes, my title is right, I would not be able to stand those kids after like 2 jobs. But Dawn does, and this is how: Dawn gets a sitting job with the BSC new clients the Barrets. But things at the Barrets are not as they seem. Mrs.Barret is out of control. The house is always a mess and so are the kids. Dawn feels like Mrs.Barrets housekeeper! She always cleans up the house and the kids! And one time Suzi threw up, and Dawn could not reach her, and another time Buddy was missing, and she could not reach her! What kind of a parent is she! Dawn thinks. But then she finds out why Mrs.Barret is so out of control, she had a really messy divorce. This was such a great book, I'm reading it again!

Cute, well presented but ultimately rather pointless,

I love knitting odd items - just finished a gargoyle - and I've got 5 cats, so a neighbour got me this book.
I had ten minutes of entertaining browsing, thinking how cute it was. There's 30 patterns (20 knit/ 10 crochet) for assorted feline headdresses. All cleverly designed with appropriate holes for ears, and generally of a 'bonnet' style, tying under the chin, they are modelled by some extremely photogenic (and placid) cats. A top hat, a cowboy hat, hats with ears, antlers, bobbles, stegosaurus spikes ...it's all there, along with a few pages of knitting/ crochet hints at back.
If you're after knitting a cat hat, I would give it 4/5. But despite my love for all things feline, I can't quite see the point. The author warns that hats can't be worn outside or unsupervised, and how many cats would tolerate being dressed up (none of my five would permit such carryings on!) I'm not sure.

Help, with Hook sizes??

Ilove the patterns but the crochet hooks sizes are in numbers and all my crochet hooks are in alphabet letters and I don't know how to convert them. so until I can I can't use the book. Can you help me??
