About the Author

Jennifer Niederst Robbins was one of the first designers for the Web. As the designer of O'Reilly's Global Network Navigator (GNN), the first commercial web site, she has been designing for the Web since 1993. She is the author of the bestselling "Web Design in a Nutshell" (O'Reilly), and has taught web design at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and Johnson and Wales University in Providence. She has spoken at major design and Internet events including SXSW Interactive, Seybold Seminars, the GRAFILL conference (Geilo, Norway), and one of the first W3C International Expos.

Comprehensive reference with all of the basic facts

This pocket reference is not recommended for HTML newbies. Instead, it is for those who are already familiar with XHTML and HTML and just need the facts in a concise format for quick reference. Particularly commendable is that any time a shorthand name for a technology is used, DTD for example, that term is defined completely so that you don't have to go back and forth among several references to look up all associated terminology. It has been four years since a new edition of "HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide" was published, and this little guide does a good job of showing what has changed over the last few years. I recommend it for all who want to keep up-to-date with HTML and XHTML without buying yet another 400 page book. Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here.

Replaces five pounds of "other books"...

My bookshelf at work just got about five pounds lighter with the addition of this book... HTML & XHTML Pocket Reference (3rd Edition) by Jennifer Niederst Robbins.

Contents: HTML and XHTML Fundamentals; Alphabetical List of Elements; Character Entities; Specifying Color

This is a great pocket guide, and exactly what I look for in this type of book. No fluff, just well-documented information that's easy to find, with a small number of examples to show you the format. I really appreciated the documentation on which elements and parameters are deprecated. This comes in really handy if you're looking to code strict XHTML, but you're unsure as to whether a certain feature is going to be supported or not. In most cases, I know the general tag I want to use, but I might be a bit confused as to the exact format of the different arguments. With the pocket guide, I can find that tag in seconds, see the options, and move on. I love it.

The book I've been keeping on my shelf at work for HTML reference is one of those five pound doorstops that covers absolutely everything. The problem is that I have to check the index to find what I need, and I end up using a different book for CSS information. With this pocket guide, I can retire that book, gain more room for other titles, and give my poor shelf a bit of a rest... :)

Indispensable Reference

Large books, by their very nature, can have good points and bad points. After all, if you have a couple or several hundred pages worth of material, you are bound to get some things right and some things wrong.

But these pocket reference books from O'Reilly are great. They aren't for learning, rather they are what they say they are: a pocket reference. (Nice to see some truth in advertising for a change.)

If you buy this book you will use it. A lot. Period.

About the Author

Michael Milton is the author of Head First Data Analysis. He has spent most of his career helping nonprofit organizations improve their fundraising by interpreting and acting on the data they collect from their donors.

He has a degree in philosophy from New College of Florida and one in religious ethics from Yale University. He found reading Head First to be a revelation after spending years reading boring books filled with terribly important stuff and is grateful to have the opportunity to write an exciting book filled with terribly important stuff.

When he's not in the library or the bookstore, you can find him running, taking pictures, and brewing beer.

Excellent Guide to Learning Excel

Disclaimer: I provided a technical review of Head First Excel, but have no obligation to post a glowing review.

I have been using Excel since the late 90's and would consider myself an Excel guru. There are many books on my shelf that are for Microsoft Excel. The difference with the books in my library is that they are what I would consider technical manuals. Most of the books list functions and then explain what they are and how to insert them into a spreadsheet. What makes this book different is that it puts 90% of the most useful functions in Excel into context and real-life scenarios.

If you are looking for an advanced Excel book that gets into things like VBA or true statistical analysis, like regression, then this is probably not the book for you. Also, if you can look through a list of functions in Excel and know how to use most of them, this probably isn't the right book for you. I will say that even with all of my years of experience, I still learned some things that helped improve my productivity while reviewing this book.

For those that are newer to Excel or haven't used it in a while, this is a great book that walks through many scenarios that can be applied to real-life situations. Also, if you use Excel and want to learn how to be more effective and productive, I think this is a great book that isn't written by a technician. There are explanations, examples and exercises that will make learning Excel fun.

I think Michael is well-regarded in his analytical skills and knowledge of Excel to the point that there are many examples of industry best-practices throughout the book. For example, the average Excel user may not know that pie charts are less effective than other charts available in Excel. Michael shares his knowledge and real-life experience in Head First Excel.

Finally, I would recommend Head First Data Analysis for those that may want to learn more about how to effectively analyze data.

A Great Big Push

Sadly, despite years of having Excel in my enterprise professional toolkit and years of forced reading of spreadsheets from co-workers, I am in the target audience for this book: "Have you never used Excel at all, or used it a little but never done anything powerful with it?"

Oh yes, the company I work for provides training sessions in the use of Microsoft's turgid software but I like my job and would rather be doing that and not spending draggy hours chained in a classroom. If your situation is anything similar to mine, I strongly recommend this book.

Before posting this modest review, I read the ones here. I was impressed with the thought and energy that went into the negative opinion. I certainly can't argue some of the points about filler but I can't help but feel that reviewer may not have been in the target audience. I only dream of having the concerns and foundations of comparison as she!

The "Head First" format has always impressed me, even if Microsoft software has not. The amount of labor and coordination between author, editors, artists, and page layout people that goes into this very readable and effective format is astounding. In effect, the energy that the publishing team puts into one of these books translates into a great big push up the learning hill. I only hope that push can get me as far as those pivot tables in Chapter 12!

WARNING: if your version of Excel is not the latest, this book will be of little value. Like most cubicle dwellers in this recession, I have an older version (2003). As I progressed thru this book, I began to get very irritated because I could not find the feature the author was writing about -- nor did the author even bother to acknowledge that I would have this trouble. A few pages I could skip -- but not this many and not without some gesture on the part of the author.

Go Dummies Go! Detailed, Useful Survey of Social Media.

Go Dummies Go! I love Dummies! Dummies books rule!

I always look forward to the latest installment of the such-and-such for dummies books, so I eagerly awaited my Amazon.com pre-order of Jan Zimmerman's and Doug Sahlin's Social Media Marketing (all-in-one) for Dummies. Even better it proclaimed it was eight books in one. The book is fantastic, even if it does suffer from the usual forest-vs-trees issue. It is much more a "trees" book with lots of details on each social media venue, but still a great book.

By "trees" I mean it gives you the details of each social media marketing venue: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogs, etc. For each, the authors do a nice job of overviewing the venue, and explaining the basic steps of how to create an account, what you can do with it, etc. It's a great survey of the entire Social Media Universe. Importantly, it is a critical, skeptical, ROI point of view vs. many of the simple cheerleading or laundry list books on Social Media out there. I really liked that.

By "forest," however, I mean the big picture / strategy of Social Media. The book DOES have information on building a Social Media Marketing plan and DOES have some useful case studies, but there is often just too much text and too many details. I teach Social Media Marketing (online and in San Francisco), and I have experienced that my students are just overwhelmed with the details. Less is often more, as they say, and this book could have used a re-write on the chapters on making a social media marketing plan. Missing in particular is a clear explanation of which social media venue fits which business need best.

That said, if you combine this detailed book, with some "higher level" marketing strategy... And, for example, you pre-think WHY you want to Twitter (Facebook, Youtube, MySpace, LinkedIn), and WHY your potential customers might care to listen / converse with you... You will have a dynamite combination. Don't be afraid to realize that perhaps you don't NEED Twitter - that Youtube is a BETTER fit for your company.

Bach's first and best book

Richard Bach's first book came to my attention when it was reviewed in the WALL STREET JOURNAL at first publication. I re-read it often. As a pilot with time in current fighters, I was stunned by the clarity and power of his depictions of flight. But one need not be a pilot to enjoy this work because it always remains 'grounded' (in the sense of structure and ideas, not literally).
STRANGER got me for a core reason not often discussed with respect to flying; the book meets this criterion resoundingly: it is totally honest. Why does this matter? Because flying, especially complex modern airplanes (the F-84F is not an easy airplane), is fundamentally an honest trade. Make a mistake or be unlucky and you may die suddenly.

If you are a beginning photographer this is a fine book. It describes step by step the process of taking pictures with your SLR camera. It also explains the stuff you need to know about metering, lenes, filters and all the other info you should know to become a good photographer.
