Photoshop Elements 8 Tips and Tricks

1. Highlight an object with color. It’s super easy to turn a color photo to a black and white image with only one colored object in it. In the photo on the left below, the waterlily looks fine but the dying leaves are distracting, so it might look better with only the flower in color. It’ll take you only a few seconds to get that effect. Just pick one of the Black & White settings for the Smart Brush and then drag over the lily. Elements does a pretty good job of finding the edges of the flower and makes it black and white, leaving the rest of the image in color. But if you turn on the Inverse checkbox before you drag, the lily stays colored and the rest of your image becomes black and white, saving you a lot of work.

2. Get rid of empty space. The new Recompose tool is great for fixing photos where squabbling siblings or cranky coworkers refused to stand close together. It’s also handy if you ever have to do how-to illustrations—you can easily get rid of extra space in a screenshot of a dialog box, for instance. You can also use Recompose to squish out unwanted elements in the middle of your photos, like in this seascape. In the pictures below, it brought the boats closer together and got rid of some of the condo sprawl in the background. Doing this left a little debris behind—a couple of stick-like lines from the largest condo—but one quick drag with the Healing brush, and there’s a lot more undeveloped beach left in the world.

3. One photo, two ways. The new Exposure Merge feature is great for blending together multiple (bracketed) exposures of the same scene, but if you only managed to get one good shot, you can process it twice in Elements’ Raw Converter—once for good shadowy areas, once for good highlights—and then merge the two into one image with good exposure throughout. You don’t even have to have a Raw format photo—it works with JPEG images, too. This is a JPEG photo where the interior was so underexposed that the lawn outside disappeared into a white glare when the interior was properly adjusted. So I made two versions, one for the indoor areas and one for the outside, then did the simplest exposure merge in Elements: an automatic merge. If I’d wanted to get fancy I could have had more control over the end result, but even the automatic merge is a big improvement over the first photo.

Barbara Brundage is the author of Photoshop Elements 6: The Missing Manual, and Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac: The Missing Manual, an Adobe Community Expert, and a member of Adobe's prerelease groups for Elements 3, 4, 5, and 6. She's been teaching people how to use Photoshop Elements since it first came out in 2001. Barbara first started using Elements to create graphics for use in her day job as a harpist, music publisher, and arranger. Along the way, she joined the large group of people finding a renewed interest in photography thanks to digital cameras. If she can learn to use Elements, you can, too!

Detailed, yet user-friendly treatment of a feature-dense product

Like earlier versions of Photoshop Elements (PSE), Photoshop Elements 8 is both powerful and complex. While it has some automated functions, users hoping to harness its full power are going to need some help. Barbara Brundage offers this help in a detailed guide that explores the higher functions of PSE, while respecting the challenges many readers may have in grasping complex technology.

Brundage offers both conceptual overviews and tutorials of PSE 8's interface and functions. She effectively breaks down the the concepts of file management, basic editing, image manipulation and sharing of the results of these digital editing techniques. Particularly useful are the two appendices, which provide a summary of ALL of the (many many!)menu items in the two main components of PSE (its editor and the organizer).

Minor deficiencies are present in this book. While it certainly provides sound advice on avoiding Adobe's deliberate efforts to guide consumers to a purchase of the "Plus" version of the online extension to PSE 8, it doesn't mention the wide scope of Adobe's data collection of user activities associated with this (in both the free and "Plus" online adjuncts). Advice to consumers to read the EULA if they have concerns about how Adobe will collect their data would have been a welcome addition. Also, the book correctly states that PSE 8 can be installed with earlier versions of PSE. While this is true (and you won't be forced to uninstall any earlier version), it doesn't mention that PSE 8 will force you to choose which single version of PSE you'll want to keep using. Finally, the book says that "the help files that ship with Elements are sometimes incomplete". More correctly, in PSE they are absent. The Help menu in PSE 8 launches a browser and takes you online, where all the help content is located. You can download a 27 MB .pdf help file (which users without persistent connectivity should consider).

These are small shortcomings that do not detract seriously from the overall worth of this book, which is valuable tool with great utility for serious amateur (or frugal professional) photographers or digital artists expanding their craft.

Get This Book!!

I recently ordered Elements 8 and I have used many photo editing programs but knew if I wanted to get the full use of the software I would need a guide beyond the help menus. I ordered this book and Elements 8 for Dummies thinking that this book would be more tech talk-ish. I was wrong this book is the one I use more! It is very easy to follow and has much better in-depth info! I was also amazed that it got to N. Iraq in 7 days!..thanx Amazon!

This book Rocks. I opened my Package from Amazon & was blown away. The book covers anything & everything inside Photoshop 8. The best part is its simple to understand & makes using photoshop elements 8 a dream. I'm very happy with the product, and as an underwater photographer this was money well spent!

My 6 year old loves it

I recently purchased this book for my 6 year old son.

The bank just got robbed by 3 crooks and it is up to the police to find them and save the day. My son really enjoyed this book. Some of the illustrations go along with some of the lego kits he has. Easy, understandable text and great illustrations. A must own for the lego lover that is beginning to read.

Not many words BUT some good challenger words!

My son who is winding up his Kinder year (homeschool) must read a new book aloud everyday. I'm always looking for high-interest books while trying to keep it age/level appropriate. I'll admit, I purchased this solely for the interest (he loves Legos), but secretly wished this title (or similar) was offered at a Level 3.
He tends to get excited over books, but I have never seen him light up the way he did when this came out of the box! The first thing I noticed was that it did not offer very many words per page (fitting for a level 1), but I was pleased to see several challenging words in the short sentences.

A few good challenger words are: sirens, video, questions, officer

Bottom line: he LOVED the story, and illustrations, and he also loved watching his Lego sets come to life. I have purchased several Lego themed readers, and we have been pleased with all of them. I highly recommend these high-interest readers for any Lego fan!

Good bed-time reading for 4 year-old

This was a good, quick bedtime reading story for my 4 year-old. When he's starting to read on his own this will probably be a very good one for him to read. He liked it but he didn't love it. These Level 1 Reader books are a bit too short and simplistic for parents to read to the child. It takes just a few minutes (if you take your time) to get thru the whole thing, you'd have to read at least 2 (or more) at this level for your child to be satisfied. The simplistic story telling style probably would have been great if my kid was a bit younger still, or if he was reading on his own. That being said, he did like it some and we will read it again (combined with one of the level 2's).

My reading experience!

So I've seen the movie many times. The book very different, in my opinion. I wasn't scared until I got to one part of the book. After reading that one part (won't give it away) it took me two days to pick the book up again. I've finished it and threw it away. Books don't normally scare me but this one got me good!

Why I liked the movie better

I hope I am not biased because I saw the film first. The movie came out a good decade before I was born and I wasn't old enough to see it for some time after, so of course I saw the movie before reading the book. I just came across the book recently and it was excellent, so I wanted to comment on it.

My only problem was that it seemed like it took Father Karras 200 pages to decide that Regan was not simply mentally ill. While I can respect his inner turmoil regarding his faith - after all, faith is a pretty difficult thing - it seemed so overly simplistic. I have studied a lot of psychology and met a lot of mentally ill people, and I have never met anyone who could bend their bodies in half, produce weird smells, make the room cold, make strange sounds, make impressions on their skin, have a sudden recollection of a brief childhood exposure to a language, become psychokinetic, or become telepathic just because something was wrong with their brain. Father Karras potentially attributed all these things to Regan being "maybe mentally ill." It was frustrating. I wanted to scream, "Please, just get on with it!" Especially since Regan developed all of these abilities within a week. (I have met two different women diagnosed with multiple personality - that's "dissociative identity disorder" in politically correct terms. Neither of them had special powers. Incidentally, I've never met anyone who was possessed!)

Besides that, the book was amazing. It filled in all the details that were missing from the movie, as books usually do. Most notably, I always wondered why there were no legal complications, seeing how three men died and all. Kinderman really seemed to let that go pretty easily at the end of the movie. In the book his role was explored much further. The movie was so disturbing, but the book was even more so. I was glad to have a chance to read the original material but I think I'm glad they left out some of those scenes!

Grades 4-7--In this third book in Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising sequence (McElderry, 1985), Simon, Jane, and Barney return to Cornwall with their Uncle Merry after learning that the grail they had found in Over Sea, Under Stone (Harcourt, 1966) has been stolen from the British Museum. Will Stanton and his American uncle come to Cornwall as well, and initially there is some tension between the children. The locals are preparing for a celebration in which the women fashion a being from sticks and leaves and toss it into the sea. Jane's kindness wins the favor of this mystical effigy and it yields its secret the manuscript that will make it possible to decipher the writing on the grail. Although the grail has been stolen by the Dark, it is found and the writing proves to be the prophetic rhyme whose words will be fulfilled in the next books. The story requires some knowledge of the previous books, and only becomes complete after reading the subsequent books. This exciting and beautifully written story is filled with magic and mystery. It is unfortunate that the man who stole the grail identifies himself as part Romany, or Gypsy, thus reinforcing a negative stereotype. Alec Jennings does a superb job of reading this tale, as he has done with the first two books in the series. His expression and pacing suit the story well, and he is at ease with Cornish names and words. There are two places where editing cuts words short: when Merry tells the children to "look it up" it sounds like "crit up," and when the thief tells Barney to "open the box" it sounds like "pen the box." These quibbles aside, the technical quality is excellent. Libraries in which this series is popular will want this recording if they are buying the others in the sequence. Otherwise, The Dark Is Rising (Aug. 1999, p. 68) and The Grey King (Oct. 2001, p. 89) are more vital purchases.

On Greenwitch time

Let's carefully examine the fantasy series books that are considered classical literature appropriate for adults as well. You have your "Lord of the Rings" and your "His Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman. And between these two greats we have sandwiched in the center the "Dark Is Rising" books by Susan Cooper. Dark is the right word for them too. Belying their ridiculous Aladdin Paperback covers (The paperback of "Greenwitch" shows a kindly, albeit green, old grandmother rather than an untamed featureless product of Wild Magic) the books cull Celtic tradition, English myth, and Gaelic and Welsh influences to produce a series that is so fully original and intelligent that it is all a person can do not to force it into the hands of every fantasy-luvin Harry Potterite. "Greenwitch", the third in the series, brings together characters we've met in separate novels and does so with dexterous skill.

When Simon, Jane, and Barney found the Trewissick Grail in, "Over Sea, Under Stone", they never expected it to disappear so quickly. But disappear it has and from a national museum no less. Of course, without the lead case that translates the words on the Grail, the object in and of itself is of little use. Now their great-uncle Merriman has decided to take them back to Trewissick in search of the item, and with them comes a new addition. Young Will Stanton appears to the other kids to be a likable but slightly stupid young addition to their crew. Unbeknownst of them, of course, he's an Old One like Merriman and has powers far beyond their understanding. Together, these stalwart five will do battle with an emissary of the Dark, utter prophecies, and meet representatives of the Wild Magic. And none are quite so wild as the impressive Greenwitch herself.

When I was a kid there was nothing I hated more than to read the first book in a series (such as "The Wizard of Oz") then move on to the second book and find that characters I loved in the first (like Dorothy) were nowhere to be seen. Yet I didn't really dislike this fact when it came to "The Dark Is Rising". In the first book "Over Sea, Under Stone" we meet the Drew children, Simon, Jane, and Barney. We also meet their mysterious great-uncle Merriman. In the second book "The Dark Is Rising" the Drews are nowhere to be seen but Merriman's back and so is our hero Will Stanton. So when all four kids meet up in "Greenwitch" it feels especially satisfying. Like you're in for the extra special treat of watching the normal children (who take an instant disliking to Will) interact with a fellow who is without age. I particularly loved the moments when it was clear that Will was a kind of superhero at times. Jane's the only one who picks up on this at the beginning, but Simon and Barney definitely have it knocked into their skulls by the end. Interestingly, the book mostly takes the point of view of the Drews. In "The Dark Is Rising" we were privy to Will's thoughts and feelings. Now he's become almost as withdrawn and mysterious as Merriman, closing out not only the other kids but the readers as well.

One thing that Cooper does in the books (and this is the same objection I had to the end of fellow fabulous Celtic fantasy novel "The Hounds of the Morrigan") is that the good guys (i.e. The Light) are able to make the children forget things. So when Jane asks Merriman if he has "magicked" her brothers to sleep and he replies, "Nothing has been done to any of you, or will be", he's not being completely honest. Something has been done to the kids. They've been told to forget something earlier in the book that would have disturbed them. It seems an odd thing to happen to our heroes. After all, what good are allies if you keep on messing about with their memories? Or are they trying to preserve some odd notion of childhood innocence? Whatever the case, I could do without it. Cooper also has never quite grasped the importance of humor. Unlike Lloyd Alexander's, "Prydain Chronicles" (or "Harry Potter" for that matter) she uses it scantily at best. Her other books (like the lovely "Boggart" duo) are a little better, but definitely don't expect "Greenwitch" to be some kind of laugh riot. We're looking at vast prophecies and the potential end of the world here, people. No giggling please.

Aside from that, the book is incredibly readable. Of course, if the child you hand it to hasn't read the first two books, it might still grab their attention. Just not as closely. And Cooper has a fondness for description that definitely turned me off as a child (I would skim for pages and pages until I reach an island of dialogue, thereby completely missing 75% of the plot). So get ready for some well-written if wordy descriptions in this puppy as well. It makes for a fine addition to the series and a fine read too.

The third volume in THE DARK IS RISING Sequence

"Power from the green witch, lost beneath the sea..."

Although GREENWITCH is the third of the five books within this series, it is more nearly a sequel to the first book than the second because in a way it is a completion of the individual quest begun in OVER SEA, UNDER STONE. GREENWITCH could be read without having read the second book, although having done so will give the reader a truer perspective on one of the characters introduced in that book.

Like each of the other books in the series, GREENWITCH manages to inject new complications into the six main characters' relationships with one another. At this point, five of the six have been introduced (the three Drews and Merriman Lyon in the first book, Will Stanton in the second), but the Drews have never met Will, and as his presence is not explained to them, they naturally resent him a great deal at first as an unwelcome intruder (unaware that he knows more about what's going on than they do, despite how matters appear on the surface). The presence of the Drews makes the story particularly enjoyable, as they provide a genuine Everyman point of view amid all the mysteries of this series of quests and battles against the Dark, in contrast to the equally interesting but different perspective of the more knowledgeable and powerful characters.

In a way, the story picks up exactly where the first book ended, but in a very different mood - the Drews are standing in the same place in the British Museum and looking at the same thing, but in dejection rather than triumph. For the Trewissick grail discovered in the first book has been stolen by a mysterious agent of the Dark, who hopes to complete the quest left unfinished the previous summer, an agent about whom even Merriman and Will know very little.

As in each book in the series, this quest takes place at one of the great festivals of the Celtic year, here the spring festival still observed in Trewissick by the making of the Greenwitch, a great leafy image made by the village women in a single night and ceremonially thrown into the sea upon the fishermen's return at dawn. Unknown to the villagers, the Greenwitch belongs to the Wild Magic, a force not allied to either the Light or the Dark in their long struggle, and of which we have seen little in the series up to this point.

And the Greenwitch - which awakens each year after being given to the sea, and has a brief, independent, and immensely lonely existence before being swept out to the deeps - has its own agenda, which like the Wild Magic is independent of the needs and desires of either Light or Dark, and like it must be persuaded rather than compelled to cooperate. The Greenwitch's character is particularly compelling - it depends on humans for its very existence, but its few days of independent life each year are so bitterly lonely that it easily feels resentment against everything else in the world, for allowing it to be made and then cast out uncomforted.

Most unfortunately for both sides, the lost portion of the object of power known as the Trewissick grail - lost even when the grail itself was first found - has entered the sea, making it subject to a power indifferent to their war. Worse, it lies dangerously near the Greenwitch's temporary resting place, in the control of a creature whose inherent wildness coupled with its bitter feelings makes it very dangerous to approach.

This book is well worth reading, and doesn't suffer from being the middle portion of a longer story. While it is best read after reading the story to date, it is in itself an important quest, and achieves a great thing (though the greatest achievement in the story may not be what the reader was expecting). Furthermore, in addition to showing us the Wild Magic as yet another side and another perspective to the great magical forces that operate mostly outside human awareness, this book adds a twist in the form of the Dark's mysterious agent, whose character is very distinct from those of the great lords who tend to be the Dark's representatives in other books, and who thus gives us a new perspective on the Light's ancient enemy.

In addition to the book itself, I highly recommend the unabridged audio edition read by Alex Jennings. Hearing the voices of the Cornish characters in particular is a treat.

Modern and comprehensive

Hooper's review of the Kama Sutra puts the old text in a modern light. She simplifies the traditional Indian principles with excerpts from many notable sources. Short but sweet, the guidance and advice drawn out in this book are sincere, romantic, and thoughtful. Nothing I've read from it seem out of my range or uncomfortable, and the flirtation methods are great. I gave this as a gift to my fiance (...hint, hint!)

We bought it expecting it to kinda be a updated version with actual pics. Anyways it is alot of commen sense and deals alot with foreplay. We looked at it once and havent looked since. We dont recommend it, unless your maybe a virgin and have zero idea what your dong.

You give your hand to me, and then you say hello

The phrase "I laughed, I cried" has been so overdone in popular culture that attaching it to a book review is almost pointless these days. I mean, it's an incredibly overused sentence. People who've sat down and watched half an hour of "The Jerry Springer Show" are as likely to say it as people who've read "Les Miserables" cover to cover. I wanted to begin this review of David Klass's fabulous, "You Don't Know Me" by saying it. I'm a fairly hard-core book reviewer and I don't laugh OR cry at books easily. Heck, I can read a Lurlene McDaniels book without cracking so much as a sniffle (not a particularly difficult thing to do, but you get the picture). But "You Don't Know Me" is so well written, so funny and sad all at the same time, that it was literally impossible not to laugh AND cry at it all at once. This is the highest praise I can think to give this book. I state for the record that this is perhaps one of the greatest young adult novels written in the last ten years. So sayeth me.

You don't know John. You know absolutely nothing about him. You don't know what he looks like or how he feels or where he lives or what his life is like. Soon enough, however, you begin to learn more and more about him. As it happens, this book takes place from John's mind, a fascinating world of wry sarcasm, dead-pan humor, and ridiculous situations. John negates his existence by telling you frankly that his home is not a home because of the man who is not his father. His mother's boyfriend is a violent horrible person that beats John whenever he gets a chance, but does it in such a way that it leaves no visible marks on the fourteen-year-old boy. At school, John hardly fairs any better. He is desperately in love with a girl that he has nicknamed Gloria Hallelujah and he attempts in band to play a tuba that is not a tuba. It is, instead, a giant frog pretending to be a tuba. John has arrived at this conclusion due to the fact that his tuba does not play music, but rather, croaks. When John finally gets up the nerve to ask Gloria on a date, his world improves and destructs almost simultaneously. Within one week everything will change for John and the only question that remains is, will he survive it?

Using humor in a YA novel centered on abuse isn't a particularly new concept. The brilliant "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson uses it well. But there's a bitterness to "Speak" that taints it in some way. The sardonic voice of "You Don't Know Me" is saying humorous thinks because of the bleakness of his life, true. On the other hand, you really grow to love John. He's a fighter. He will not kill himself or run away from home when his problems become immense because he feels (perhaps rightly) that to do so would be a form of surrender. I was also impressed that Klass broke the old if-a-gun-appears-in-the-first-act-of-a-play-it'll-be-used-by-the-third-act rule. That takes guts and not a little sly writing.

But again, it's because the book's so funny that it flows effortlessly from scene to scene. When John passes a note to the girl he loves more than anything else on the planet, he is certain that whatever reaction she has to it will give him some indication of her feelings. So when she eats it immediately, he is understandably baffled. It makes for some wonderful writing, especially where John asks his make-believe father what that means and gets a great response. Klass is adept at displaying John's mother's boyfriend in all his nasty glory as well. When it snows the man merely looks up to the sky and says "sky dandruff". This is a book that's as liable to tread into sweetness and light as it is into gloom and doom. And through it all you're rooting for John. You're really cheering for him. You want him to trust the right people and drop the wrong ones. You want him to stop living so much in his own head (even though it's a great place for us, the readers, to be). You want what's best for the book's hero, but most of all you just want him to be happy. And Klass delivers tenfold.

So I laughed. I cried. It was better than many a young adult novel I've read recently. Don't let the dreary cover and even drearier title fool you. "You Don't Know Me" is writing gold. It's the sarcastic sardonic answer to every after-school special ever produced. Maybe what I loved the most about it was that it was so grippingly honest. Some books don't have the guts to tell you the truth about their characters. Some books don't have the skill to tell you their story well. "You Don't Know Me" has guts, skill, and extraordinary talent within its pages. If you can choose only one teen novel to go with you on a desert island somewhere, pick Klass's masterpiece. Get to know it.

This was probably the BEST book I have ever read. I liked the charactorization and the plot. It was very descriptive and I liked how the author ( David Klass ) described everything with so much detail. YOU DON'T KNOW ME is a book about a 14 year old boy named John who deals with everyday problems that average teenagers deal with. Most of the book is about him working up the curage to ask out "Glory Hallelujah", a girl that he has liked forever. Also, he has to deal with his mom's boyfriend whom he calls "the man who is not my father". While John's mother is not around, her boyfriend yell's at John and has verbal meltdowns. John also deals with algebra. John dreads this class the most. His teacher sometimes gives him a hard time about not liking algebra. In about the middle of the book, John actually works up the courage and asks out " Glory Hallelujah". After that, he has a whole new prespective of things. When he enters the algebra class room, he is actually smiling. This is a really good book and I suggest it to kids ages 12~15... it talks about struggles that teenagers have and its interesting to read if you are around that age.

A fantastic book

In David Klass's novel "You Don't Know Me," John, the main character, deals with all the things adolesence brings. He fights with his tuba, which isn't really a tuba at all, but a frog pretending to be a tuba, he has a crush on the beautiful, but dim Gloria (Glory Halleluia), and he masters the art of looking like he's paying attention in Mrs. Moonface's algebra class. However, John has troubles other than the normal teen-aged problems. He suffers constant physical abuse from his mother's boyfriend, "the man who is not his father." His mother doesn't know about the abuse, and John is afraid of what will happen to him if he tells his mother. What does happen to him left me breathless, crying, and laughing out loud. This is a fantastic book and a must-read.
