"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth," warns Ecclesiastes 7:4, and so does the novel by Edith Wharton that takes its title from this call to heed. New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn't and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton's charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

One of Wharton's earliest descriptions of her heroine, in the library of her bachelor friend and sometime suitor Lawrence Selden, indicates that she appears "as though she were a captured dryad subdued to the conventions of the drawing room." Indeed, herein lies Lily's problem. She has, we're told, "been brought up to be ornamental," and yet her spirit is larger than what this ancillary role requires. By today's standards she would be nothing more than a mild rebel, but in the era into which Wharton drops her unmercifully, this tiny spark of character, combined with numerous assaults by vicious society women and bad luck, ultimately renders Lily persona non grata. Her own ambivalence about her position serves to open the door to disaster: several times she is on the verge of "good" marriage and squanders it at the last moment, unwilling to play by the rules of a society that produces, as she calls them, "poor, miserable, marriageable girls.

Lily's rather violent tumble down the social ladder provides a thumbnail sketch of the general injustices of the upper classes (which, incidentally, Wharton never quite manages to condemn entirely, clearly believing that such life is cruel but without alternative). From her start as a beautiful woman at the height of her powers to her sad finale as a recently fired milliner's assistant addicted to sleeping drugs, Lily Bart is heroic, not least for her final admission of her own role in her downfall. "Once--twice--you gave me the chance to escape from my life and I refused it: refused it because I was a coward," she tells Selden as the book draws to a close. All manner of hideous socialite beasts--some of whose treatment by Wharton, such as the token social-climbing Jew, Simon Rosedale, date the book unfortunately--wander through the novel while Lily plummets. As her tale winds down to nothing more than the remnants of social grace and cold hard cash, it's hard not to agree with Lily's own assessment of herself: "I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." Nevertheless, it's even harder not to believe that she deserved better, which is why The House of Mirth remains so timely and so vital in spite of its crushing end and its unflattering portrait of what life offers up. --Melanie Rehak

Wharton's account of the ill-fated life of Lily Bart receives a perfunctory treatment in this audio program. It is New York in the early 20th century; Lily loves Lawrence Selden, but he sees her as a fortune hunter, with tragic consequences. The author excels at delineating the ways money, romance, and social standing intertwine in the society of the time. Included is a lengthy introduction by Wharton biographer R.W.B. Lewis that sets the work in the context of the writer's life and career. Casual listeners may consider the preface too long and scholarly, and those coming to the novel for the first time may be put off by learning the outcome and by hearing Lewis's uncertainty about whether it is a masterpiece. Anna Fields handles the narration adequately but strains to create masculine voices and makes most of the women too flighty. As a result, the characters seem more trivial than Wharton intended. Edith Wharton was brilliant

House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, was a fantastic read. From the moment I read the first sentence to the very last page, I was captivated by Lily Bart' s life. At first, Wharton' s writing style reminded me of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen. I have been a long time fan of Austen' s, so to equate another author to her is a great praise in my eyes. N ow that I've finished the novel, I believe Wharton is in a category all her own. She is refreshing to read and has a great balance between dialogue and text. Although I liked Lily from the very beginning, I absolutely loved her by the end. There were times when her story was endearing, and other times when it was completely heartbreaking. In both instances, Wharton draws the reader into Lily' s life.
While this is not my usual cup of tea, I greatly enjoyed reading it, and suggest it to anyone who loves a thought-provoking story.

I read this for my book club and I did enjoy the story but I don't care for Edith Wharton's style of writing as she is too detailed and describes the flowers and gardens and what someone is wearing in detail and it is just my taste. The book I got from the library was old and the print was very small and the contractions such as "couldn't" had a space and would appear as could n 't and it made it even more difficult to read. Once I got my Kindle version I actually was able to read the book faster and did finish it which I doubt that I would have done if I had stuck to the library book. he other thing I didn't like about the book was that it was difficult to keep characters straight because sometimes they were referred to by their first names, sometimes by their first and last names, sometimes by Miss, Mrs., or Mr. and last name and then sometimes the women who were married were referred to as Mrs., their husband's first and last name such as Mrs. John Doe.

Old New York's pomp viewed with a sharp discerning eye

Written in 1905, this novel brought me into the world of New York society at that time. Edith Wharton lived in this world and her writing dissected its pomp with a sharp discerning eye. The people she writes about own country houses where the party never stops. They travel abroad for months at a time. Their clothes are of the finest quality. And the only possible career for a woman is to marry a rich man.

We first meet Lily Bart at the age of 29. She has been trained from childhood in all the social graces. Unfortunately for her though, her father lost all his money when she was 12 years old and both her parents died soon after that. As she was beautiful, she assumed that her looks, quick wit and personality would attract a wealthy husband, and, indeed she did attract them. But in her youth she turned down several suitors and was now aware that time was no longer on her side; she needed to marry before she lost her looks.

She has her eyes set on Percy Gryce, a dull man who will be at a party in a country home and she flirts in such a way that he is soon smitten. He is desirable for his money but he bores her to death. But this romance never works out.

There is another man of course. His name is Lawrence Selden. He is a lawyer and lives a nice life but doesn't have the wealth she thinks she requires. They become friends and it is clear to the reader that they are in love. She still keeps looking for a wealthy man though and makes one mistake after another. Even though she remains chaste, she gets into some compromising situations. There is a lot of gossip and her rich women friends either turn on her or drop her.

Her prospects get dimmer and dimmer and she even considers marrying a rich Jewish man who she had once turned down, but even he rejects her. At one point Lawrence Selden tries to help her but she rejects him too. She's penniless and has no prospects. She is living in a boarding house and trying to work in a milliner's shop but even the spangles she sews on the hats are crooked and she soon loses that job. This novel ends in tragedy.

Lily Bart is a great character. She symbolizes the reality of New York society. She also is very human and deeply flawed and even though there were times she annoyed me tremendously, I could also sympathize with her. As a New Yorker myself, I enjoyed the setting as I am very familiar with the streets and the history. This is a really fine book.

Witty and deftly paced, Koss's (The Girls) sprightly novel revitalizes a familiar plot. Sixth-grader Mitzi, the narrator, has been desperately trying to get her classmate Mike to notice her. When she gets an eyelash in her eye and starts to tear up, she is positively thrilled that he asks if she's okay. The eyelash seems too banal to mention, so almost before she knows it, Mitzi is telling Mike that her mom is sick (well, her mother is in a terrible mood from trying to quit smoking). "What should I have said?" she asks the reader. "I was crying over war? World hunger?" The lie takes on a life of its own, and soon Mitzi's whole class is making sympathy cards to help her face her mother's recovery from a critical operation ("Our hearts are with you," writes the teacher on the envelope). The author cleverly balances the lighthearted with the thoughtful, and her characterizations are both on target and very funny. Mitzi's quick repartee with her friends and parents shows particular understanding of middle-graders and their concerns, and the adults, too, are lifelike. Kids will get a strong message about the addictiveness of cigarettes, as well as about the pitfalls of straying too far from the truth, but the lessons never get in the way of the laughter. Grade 5-8-The New Year is starting out great for Mitzi Burk. Her mom has decided to quit smoking, she has the best friend a girl could want, and she's seated next to Mike Humphrey, her first crush. Then, in the space of one short month, things change dramatically. Mitzi's mother is totally wrapped up in her unsuccessful attempts to stop smoking (the cleanliness quit, the vigorous-exercise quit, and the group quit) and her best friend has found a new, cooler friend, leaving Mitzi behind. Worst of all, however, is the growing lie she has told Mike in order to make an impression on him-that her mother has the horrible disease "Stripitis." Koss does an excellent job of expressing how adolescent minds work. The characters and plot are well developed and will be familiar to many readers. Short chapters and sparkling dialogue will appeal to even the most reluctant readers. Fans of Koss's The Ashwater Experiment (Dial, 1999) will love this comical page-turner.

Mitzi has an enormous crush on Mike Humphrey, and he suddenly talks to her--right when she's tearing up because of something in her eye. Nervous and unwilling to let him get away too soon, she claims the tears are because her mother is very ill. Bad idea! The fib grows and grows, and suddenly Mitzi and her family are the object of embarrassing attention at school. Thankfully, the story doesn't get carried away with the antifib message; it's a breezy yet poignant look at young adolescence. The difficulties Mitzi's mom experiences as she tries to quit smoking are credibly shown through Mitzi's eyes, as are the stresses of adolescent friendships and wanna-be relationships with boys. Smoke Screen

Mitzi's mother is trying desperately quit smoking, and her withdrawal symptons is driving the whole family crazy. But Mitzi has more to worry about than her Mom's mood swings. She's got to find a way to get Mike Humphrey, her mad crush, to beam his ultra-smile in her direction. And her best friend, Birdy, is too busy getting chummy with a popular girl named Roxy to help. So when Mitzi tells miake a huge lie about her mother's condtition just to get his attention, she has no one to blame but herself for the trouble that follows.
I really enjoyed this story, even though I have never had any similar problems. I can still relate to Mitzi though, by the way she tries to get boy's attention, yet I have never gotten in as much trouble as she does in this story !

The book I read is called Smokescreen and it is by Amy Coss. The story is about a normal girl Mitzi and she has troubles with her life. The first trouble she has in her life is that her mom smokes a lot. Her mom keeps on trying to quit but can't handle herself and keeps smoking. Her second problem is that her best friend has a new girl to hang out with named Roxy and Mitzi feels forlorn. She is also concerned for her best friend because Roxy and Birdy (the best friend) were caught smoking a cigarette. The third problem is that a boy named Mike Humphrey does not notice her. The last problem is a result of Mitzi trying to get Mike to like her. Mitzi tells Mike that her mother is DEATHLY ill and is in the hospital. Mitzi thinks that by telling Mike this, he will feel pity on her and start liking her. But her plan backfires because Mitzi's mother is first off, not ill at all. Second off, Mitzi keeps worrying about her mother running into Mike's mother. And lastly Mitzi feels pretty bad about telling such a bad lie like that just to get some guy to notice her. All of these problems are resolved though. The smoking problem with the mother is resolved when the mother realizes the lie Mitzi told was based on her smoking. The problem with Birdy hanging out with Roxy more was resolved because Birdy realized that she honestly didn't like Roxy and Roxy just got Birdy into trouble. The problem with Mike Humphrey was resolved when Mitzi found out that Mike was just another comic-book dork. And finally the problem with the lie was resolved when the parents of Mitzi said that she did not have to tell the truth to the school because it was actually the parents fault for her lies.

This book is called Smoke Screen. It was written by Amy Goldberg. I would recommend this book to someone because it is a book that you don't want to put down. My favorite part in the book is when her mom stops smoking, but at that same time her boyfriend breaks up with her. That part is funny because she was happy that her mom stopped smoking, but she was upset that her boyfriend hurt her feelings. She had a fit. Then when her boyfriend went back to her, her mom started smoking again. The problem was that her mom didn't like her boyfriend, so when they got back together her mom got stressed. You must read this book.

Grade 4-8?Bial's simple, eloquent text explains how the Underground Railroad worked and why it was necessary, as well as the hardships involved in the journey north. The black-and-white period reproductions are good, but Bial's full-color photographs are what make this title outstanding. Many of them show historical sites, including houses that served as stations along the escape route. Several of them were taken at night, and so readers see the places as the fugitives themselves might have viewed them. The simple picture of a child's abandoned doll is a wonderful example of Bial's talent. Although some background knowledge of the Civil War and the institution of slavery is helpful in understanding this book, it can still be read and appreciated without that background. This title could be effectively combined with Charles L. Blockson's The Underground Railroad (Berkley, 1994) to add insight into the harrowing experiences of slaves during the Civil War.?Elizabeth M. As Bial says in his introduction, photography was not yet invented when many of the daring escapes on the Underground Railroad occurred, and because everything had to be kept so secret, few documentary records have survived. In his simple photo-essay, he tries to re-create the experience of the brave runaways and conductors. He has photographed the places and objects that tell the story: the rivers the people crossed, the plantations they ran from, the homes that sheltered them with a lit window to signal a safe haven, the secret passages and trapdoors, and the courthouse yard where the slave auctions took place. He also includes drawings and prints from the times and a wanted poster for runaway "property." The text provides a brief historical overview, with quotes from some of the leaders, such as Tubman and Douglass. The book design is handsome, with thick paper, clear type, and fine reproductions; there's also a chronology and bibliography. Like a museum exhibit, the stirring photographs help us imagine what it must have been like for those who found the courage to run and to help others. Hazel Rochman

Excellent Book!

I am a teacher who has used this book to teach about the Underground Railroad. My students find it fascinating and easy to read (4th-5th grade). Good pictures and stories, too.

I really loved this book I LEARNED SO MUCH. You want be dissappointed if you purchase this book I never have heard or read about all the Abolitionist and secret hiding places in homes used to hide runaways..

Presents factual information, avoiding potentially disturbing content

The book uses photographs of present-day houses and artifacts so that illustrations are accurate. Obviously, that limits the content of the book to fairly innocuous material. It focuses on relatively northern states, presenting a relatively rosy picture of the likelihood of escaped slaves reaching freedom and of the number of white people opposed to slavery.

The written materials are presented in short chunks, and should be accessible to children at the 4th grade reading level.

Saddleback Educational Publishing has come up with a brilliant concept for solving a very serious problem: the great decline in reading among today's students. Their solution? Make assigned reading materials exciting! Their Pageturners books are short novels, designed to entice even the least motivated students into reading.

This confronts both of the major problems with more traditional readers: if they are not mind-numbingly dull, they are excruciatingly didactic, cramming some important "teachings" whether moral, religious, or (these days) politically correct down the throats of children so hard as to turn them off of reading for good.

The former fat girl, now gorgeous actress, from Rollie Torres' high school days walks in the door of the detective agency he now works for, begging for protection from a mysterious stalker, and the "surprise twist ending" will be obvious to most readers from the very first chapter. If Rollie is THIS easily fooled perhaps he should reconsider a career in law enforcement! Hard to believe that the same author wrote the MUCH better The Case of the Bad Seed.

Still, for what they are intended to be, reading textbooks, they are wonderful. The fact that students who learn to read better and to love reading from these books may soon find them skimpy fare for pleasure reading is not entirely bad, assuming their teachers quickly move them on to bigger and better things in the school library or the bookstore if necessary.

The story was so descriptive, I was able to picture the characters and scenes. This book gave me a lot to think about, like what kids of divorce might be going through, and about kids that have a tough time in school and how they feel. I liked this book.

"Oh, spare me!" Joe objected. "Violence solves quite a lot of things as your need to be rescued violently by us proves! It is rather that violence is not necessarily the BEST way to solve things when there is a peaceful alternative available!"

"Yes, I see your point," the creature admitted.

OK, I made up that last part, but I wish Joe HAD given such a response to this, mercifully, the sole example of PC idiocy in this book.

Her mother claims to have been kidnapped the very same night from the very same place! An SF story with lots of thrills and lots of twists before the end!

There are certain books about a parent's unconditional love for a child that are timeless--and this is one of them. (Baltimore's Child 2010-01-20)

One of my all-time favorites. I cry every time I read it.... [The book] is a beautiful script about parenthood, a poignant parable about life and death, a testimony to when the roles of child and parent become blurry. The story reminds you that no matter how grown up you are, you're always someone's child; that no matter how "adult" you are, you're never too old to be loved by your parents. It makes me appreciate even more how my mother still calls me and my brother (despite us being 32- and 22-years-old, respectively) by our childhood nicknames, Pussycat and Tchotchke (Yiddish for "knickknack"). Pigeonholing this as a children's book is like saying "Romeo & Juliet" is merely a cautionary tale about drug abuse. I dare anyone to read this story and not shed at least one tear by the end. My granddaughter used this in the euology for her mom

My daughter in law read this to her children from birth. Every night. They are 16 and 18 now. Hurricane Katrina came and in fleeing from the rising water, their mother was killed. We did not get her body back until Nov. 18. All this time we have been searching and grieving. For the memorial service my granddauther wrote the euolgy and started it with "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." My mom read this to me every night etc. And at the end, with everyone crying and hearts breaking, she read "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My mommy you'll be." When she went to the flooded house recently she found the book, wet, nasty with mud, but she found the book she treasured to remember her mom.

A Beautiful, Touching Parable

This little classic is readily and easily digested by one who has known the true love of a mother. My mother gave me this book during the first Christmas with my new baby daughter in 1992. I had no idea that within the year, my father would be gone, and I would begin to give tender care to my precious little mother who would begin "getting very sick" much like the mother in the book. I cried a bucket of tears as I read it aloud with my wife, mother and father for the very first time. When my mom passed on, it was a tender and precious time at her bedside, and very reminiscent of this tender little book.
Today, my two girls go for it regularly on my shelf at bedtime. They tease me because I can't get through it without crying. Funny to me that they have a very good grasp of allegory and they, unlike some of the book's critics, understand that the scenes with the mother coming to the man's apartment are actually his memories of her love. They understand, as I explain to them that the love poured into the son by his mother, has taught him how to love his new baby daughter at the end.
Love begets love, and this little childrens' parable is a powerful reminder! I highly recommend _Love You Forever_ to anyone who enjoyed a wonderful love with their mother. To others, I'm sorry but you simply won't (and obviously don't) understand. It's not written for you.

On the fence...

I apologize in advance if I step on any toes. I want this review to be as accurate as possible, as this book seem to be an object of controversy amongst the readers, who either love or hate the story. I have seen this book many times but never read it until today as I thought, by looking at the front cover, that it was a potty book.

I wanted to buy this book, along with the French version, as a Christmas present for my children, ages 2, 10 and 15. I read a lot of reviews amongst the 5 stars and the 1 star reviews that were given, to try to get an idea of the book and what other parents and children thought of it. It made me even more confused about buying "Love you forever ".

I then looked on Youtube and saw that you can actually listen to Robert Munsch read the story out loud. If you can get passed the fact that he does a horrible job narrating the story, you might be able to listen to the full 6 minutes of it... I sat down with my children, and we listened to the story while looking at pictures of the book that were shown at the same time.
It didn't hold my 2 year old's attention for more than a couple of minutes. On the other hand, my other 2 kids listened to the whole story. At the end, I asked them what they thought of the story. They said that "it was a very sweet story about a mom who loves her son very much, but it was weird that she climbs through his window when he is a grown man and creepy that she would rock him while he is asleep". In all honesty, I asked them to rate the book between 1 and 5 stars. They both gave the book 5 stars because they thought it was a sweet story.

As I was going to put the books in my cart, they both proceeded to burst in tears because they were sad that the mom had died. I then explained to them how I understood the book. My version was pretty similar to theirs: it is a story about a mom who loves her child very much, and sees him as "her" baby no matter how old he is ( not necessarily "a" baby) . I explained to them that the mom crawling through her son's window and rocking him were a bit exaggerated, but it shows the reader what a mom would do to let her child know how much she loves him. Now the son is a Dad, and he will love his daughter just as much as his mom loved him. We also talked about life and death, and I reassured them that they would always be my babies and that I would be their mom for a long, long time.

As a conclusion, I will not be buying "Love you forever" as my kids won't enjoy reading it or having it read to them. They like the idea of how much the mom loves her son but the sweetness of the story gets lost when the adult son loses his mom.
I would not give this book as a present to a new mom or to a child, no matter how old the child is. I think it is a matter of personal preferences whether you decide to buy this book for your child. I wouldn't take a chance of buying it as a present for anyone else than my own child, as some parents might be offended by how the bond between the mom and her son is being described throughout the whole story.

I wanted this review to be as honest as possible and I felt that having children that fit in the age category of the child portrayed in the book made this review more accurate since their opinion is as important than mine, if not more.

One that transcends the color of our skin

When I picked up a copy of this book for one of my graduate courses, I had no idea how much the poetry would impact me; so many of Maya Angelou's poems are inspiring, haunting, beautiful, and decadent. Being that she is African-American and I am white, I wondered what kind of connection there could be. After reading "Sounds Like Pearls" and "Poor Girl", I realized how wrong I was. We share a human connection, one that transcends the color of our skin.
"Poor Girl" hit so close to home because I have been through the wreckage of infidelity. I know what it is like to watch someone you love leave for the other side of the fence.
In the year since his leaving, I have also discovered that my heart is healing and I am happy again. When I read the eight lines of "Sounds Like Pearls", I cried at the realization that I am allowing myself to let go of my heart; that when I am around a certain someone, "Doubt and fear,/ Ungainly things,/ With bushings/ Disappear."
Another poem that touched my funny bone was "The Health-Food Dinner." I laughed out loud and promptly read it to my mother who is a health-food nut. Even she enjoyed the humor and promised she would never make us eat "uncooked kale."
I loved how these different poems could connect to different emotions that each of us feels, from sadness to healing to laughter.
This is a collection of poems that I will pick up and read again and again throughout my life. With each reading, I will connect, through human-ness and emotion, to the words Maya Angelou has written.
I highly recommend this volume of poetry to anyone with emotion and a desire to know them deeper.

Wonderful Book of Poetry

This fantastic book of verse and poetry is a must read. It's filled with golden nuggets. I keep a copy in my car for inspirational reading. One of the most moving poems is "Still I Rise." The words of this poem remind us that the spirit is capable of rising above all odds and obstacles. Allowing for normal reflection of our youth is "Harlem Hopscotch." One cannot help but reflect on the days of sidewalk games, acting cool, and getting to sing and to hop. The poem allows us to recall such fun days. Having intestinal fortitude is shown in "Just Like Job." It reminds us that even though life is a struggle, victory is there when we call upon God our creator. He hears our pleas and attends to our needs. This book is one of encouragement and motivation. As a result, it relaxes the soul. Also check "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul" with its new addition of Epulaeryu poems.

I am a fan of Maya's and I 'm familiar with her words of wisdom. She personifies the black literary scene in poetry. The insight in which Maya as a woman allows you the the reader to feel as the essence of your being is truly wonderful. I am a aspiring poet and one of my favorite pieces is Phenomanal Woman. I love to interpete this poem with advantgarde jazz dance movements, she is a great poet and teacher. This new release is sure to be just as great as her past books of poetry and essay's. The insight into the true black intelligentsia honest, bold and truthful.
