cool kids book!

This is a great little book for kids. There are wonderful puns that will keep the adult going if reading out loud. It's quite a charming story of a family in crisis with a unique solution that solves more than the obvious problem. The illustrations are wonderful too, stylized without being too cute. I highly recommend this book and the next two in the series.

If you like the way the Jane's books describe information about Ships, Planes, and other military equipment, then you will love this book. This book describes the origins and use of space vehicles in a Science Fiction reality, but with a twist. Instead of just talking about specifications, this books talks about the ships in the context of a historical chronology.
I first read this book as a teen with an interest in Science Fiction and detail (That is why I became a designer). A few decades later (fast forward to 2002), I finally got a copy of this book, in great condition I might add, thanks to the kind folks at ...who listed a copy for sale on Amazon.com.
The art is very good and lends so much validity to the story and history of which the various ships make. There are several books in the series (Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD is the first):

I first encountered this wonderful book as a nine year old child with an eye for science fiction. I spent many months pouring over its text and imaginative paintings. As the title hints, the book is written as a 'manual' for identification of spacecraft types in wide use during the last one hundred years. The objective 'historical' writing style contributes to the readers desire to suspend disbelief and get caught up in one hundred years of war and commerce driven spacecraft design. Amazingly, the hundreds of paintings that bring the text to life are given a blanket credit to a single agency and none are given individual artist credits. All of the paintings are first rate examples of the art at the time, before George Lucas' "used universe" style would dominate the scene. I would recommend this book to any fan of science fiction.

About the Author

Kyle Loudon is a software developer at Yahoo! where he leads a group doing user interface development. Some of Kyle's experiences prior to joining Yahoo! include working on the user interface for the original Apple iPod, writing software for various other mobile devices, and leading the user interface group at Jeppesen Dataplan (a Boeing company) in the development of a flight planning system used by airlines around the world. He also spent a small amount of time with IBM in the early 1990s. For several years, he has taught object-oriented programming part-time at the University of California, Santa Cruz while working as a software developer in Silicon Valley.

Kyle received a B.S. in Computer Science from Purdue University in 1992 with a minor in French, and was elected there to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He has also done some advanced education in Computer Science at Stanford University.

Just what I was looking for

I have quite a bit of programming experience, but am just getting started with web applications. Having already done some with HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, and SQL, this book provided just what I needed by showing how all of the technologies can be used together effectively to develop a modular, scalable web application. I found it well written, to the point, and logically organized. The author has posted his example code on his website, which I am now using as a perfect lightweight framework for my application. The content was much easier to learn and understand than all of the frameworks I have been experimenting with, and gives me full control over my implementation. There are just as many ways to build a web application as there are to skin a cat, but the method described in this book is the best I've found to date.

High Performance Web Code by Example

The great value of this book is that it *shows* you how to achieve higher performance in designing and building web applications. You see a complete solution from beginning to end and the author provides the background information that explains *why* this works. The author of the book also wrote another excellent book, Mastering Algorithms in C in which he demonstrated his command of matters that impact performance. This book on large web applications is the application of those ideas that also has the side-effect of revealing an excellent way to compose a web application from the ground up.

software engineering "best practices" is of value ...but this book isn't really about LARGE

Does an excellent job with all the various web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript, server-side), beginning very simply and very quickly coming up to a fairly complex level with no asides or dead ends. Despite it's content, it's probably too terse for a "primer" all by itself, but in conjunction with some other primer type book it will quickly get you far beyond "beginner". There's a lot of coverage of what I would call "best practices". You are steered toward the right way to do things from the very start, as the gazillion wrong ways to do things are simply never described at all. It's especially strong on very heavy use of the "object-oriented" style of programming on the server side in PHP 5 (again it doesn't even mention non-object-oriented ways to do things). Coding style is perhaps the strongest point of this book; it's very impressive, some of the best I've ever seen. Kudos for that. There's much value in learning the "right" way the first time.

I was deeply disappointed though that it doesn't much address what I thought it was about from the title: LARGE. Its thesis is if you do everything in an intelligent object-oriented way, it will turn out highly modular, which in turn will be "good enough" even for very "large" sites. But it offers neither theoretical justification nor empirical data to support this hypothesis. In fact, it doesn't even crisply describe "large": is large 100 pages or 1,000 pages or 10,000 pages? 10,000 or 100,000 or 1,000,000 hits per day? 100,000 or 1,000,000 or 10,000,000 lines of Javascript? 5 or 50 or 500 people on the website maintenance team? Little of what it recommends is in some way unique to web programming - it's mostly just excellent "software engineering" practices.

Even though the book is only a few years old, I was reminded of how very fast the web changes by how dated some of the material seems. For example there are discussions of XHTML and XML (hybrids, validation, closing slashes, etc.), and of HTML vs. CSS (for example HTML tags one should never use.) Clearly it hews to the old master paradigm of web pages that hyperlink to other web pages, including applications being constructed of a sequence of web pages. The newer master paradigm of "single page applications" is never even mentioned as a future possibility. This shows clearly in the "slideshow" example, which requests a brand new complete web page from the server every time the screen flips to a new picture.

Another result of hewing to the old paradigm is still expecting every web page to be produced on demand on the fly using something like PHP. But the strategy of embedding code in HTML (or HTML in code if you wish:-) using something like PHP is known to not scale up to extremely large websites. Other techniques are necessary (massive reverse caching? constructing web pages with Javascript? enabling a DBMS to construct web pages directly? customized webservers? templating frameworks? ...?) - what's recommended?

It isn't unusual nowadays to find HTML, Javascript, and CSS assigned to three different specialists, none of whom understands the other technologies very well. How one maintains team cameraderie and consistently produces coherent and integrated modules seems to be an aspect of publishing a "large" website these days ...but it isn't covered in this book. The book seems to still expect most web workers to be "jack of all trades", where one person develops in tandem all of the HTML and the Javascript and the CSS for a module.

I was interested in knowing more about the care and feeding of well-known websites: How does one roll out new code into a live production website? How does one monitor its action, and back it out quickly and cleanly if there's a problem? How are these things done differently if the content is delivered by a CDN (with the website basically "mirrored" tens or hundreds of places)? What protections are necessary to keep developers from inadvertently breaking production websites while they're making improvements? What sorts of source control systems are needed? Which kinds of code should be kept in source control systems, and where should those systems be? What sort of real-time monitoring is necessary? How does one arrange to find out "we have a problem" a comfortable length of time _before_ "our website has gone completely off the air"? How does one measure usability, and the effect of changes on it? (For example Google found that a difference of only 100ms in response time, although completely undetectable by an individual, had a measurable impact on the reactions of large groups of users. How does one find out similar things?)

And I was interested in solutions to the problems that arise with very large websites. The heavy use of object orientation and the high level of modularity recommended by this book allow websites to get much larger than they could without those techniques. But what happens when websites get so large even a whole slew of engineering best practices still isn't enough? I'd expect this to particularly be a problem with the way Javascript is currently used. But there's no mention of anything like "closure compiler", or "grunt", or testing strategies, and insufficient coverage of conventions for imposing and using modularity. Creating and maintaining very large quantities of Javascript is the hot problem of the day, but it's not what this book is about.

The dark side of normal

Every kid -- and some adults -- has felt that they are somehow different from those around them. Imagine if you actually were.

Such is the situation for Jason Miller and his friends in "The Dark Side of Nowhere," a tense sci-fi novel by Neal Shusterman. As he gradually unrolls the aliens-living-among-us plot, Shusterman also deftly builds up the surreal sense that the everyday world is just a friendly cover for the eerie reality. It's definitely a great read.

To Jason Miller, the town of Billington is incredibly dull. The only lull in his Norman Rockwell lifestyle is the sudden, violent death of his friend Ethan by appendicitis. But after that, things began to seem strange: The new girl Paula points out that not everyone in the world receives special allergy shots, Jason finds a picture of a classmate from the 1970s, and a sinister janitor gives Jason and the other kids "training gloves" that shoot BBs like bullets.

Then Jason's parents reveal the stranger-than-fiction truth to him: They, and the families they are close to, are all alien beings stranded on Earth.

Now the janitor Grant says that alien ships are coming to conquer Earth, and strange changes are taking place in the bodies of the alien-human teens. Jason and his friends must learn more about the terrifying and beautiful alien beings that are their own species, and how to stop Earth from being threatened.

It's the dream of every small-town boy who felt that his life is too incredibly dull to be believed, and that "you'll live nice, die nice, and your life will have been a nice waste of time." It may not be every boy's dream to find out he and everyone he knows is an alien, but Shusterman manages to make it enthralling.

And his writing blends the everyday (burgers, breakfast, baseball, and a father who always calls Jason "son") and the strange (such as the scene with a certain transfigured character, or when the kids discover their body hair falling off). And he creates a sense of haunting, almost invasive tension that slowly curls away the sunshiny Norman Rockwell exterior.

And Jason is a pretty good hero -- at first he seems mainly interested in being sarcastic and cocky so he can break out of his dull life, but when a real crisis arises he shows his intelligent, resourceful side. Paula is pretty good as the human girl he has a sneaking liking for, and Grant is creepy and very believably alien. The kids around Jason are also realistic, although they seemed to be falling into line with him a little too unquestioningly.

"The Dark Side of Nowhere" is a solid, strong sci-fi novel, and Neal Shusterman's powerful writing makes a simple premise extremely good.

As many people would assert, The Dark Side of Nowhere is a thrilling book for a very specific reason. This science-fiction novel is about a young adult named Jason Miller, whose life is very, very "nice." But in his opinion, "nice" would refer to neither good nor bad. His best friend, Ethan, has perished of a burst appendix. This occurrence leaves Jason terribly hurt and saddened, and then starts to call his life plain and simple. It is tedious and monotonous. The teenager lives in a small town called Billington, which is, according to him, the most boring place in the world. But as he learns from his father and the school janitor that he is one of the Warrior-Fools, alien group that has failed its invasion of planet Earth, his life becomes an awful perplexity and bewilderment. He is the most "normal" person on the face of the globe, and yet, he is forced to believe the unbelievable. He finally decides that he really is an alien after all. As the school janitor reveals this fact to him and gives him a special metal glove shooting BBs, Jason meets his friend Ethan, who hasn't genuinely died. He has just taken the appearance of an extraterrestrial. The Warrior-Fools had been treated with a special DNA injection that kept them in "human shape." They had taken the external looks of the people who were killed during their attack. But as the quantity of DNA injections lessen, Ethan, Jason and all of his friends commence to show symptoms of creatures from outer space. This book is one that many reluctant readers will surely enjoy. I am very unwilling, but I liked it. It is a piece of literature which "hooks you up" and almost forbids you to leave it aside. Knowing that it is a novel of man vs. himself made me read it in three days, staying until five in the morning in order to finish it completely. At numerous intervals during the story, Jason always inquires himself whether or not he is right about his decision-making, and whether he is human. He almost asks the reader for his opinion on the dilemmas he encounters. In addition, I enjoyed the suspense that the author used. At every single point during the course of the tale, I was always "drooling" to learn what would transpire next. An example is when Jason is given the metal glove. Nevertheless, The Dark Side of Nowhere was a little bit confusing. I had to read the book four times to understand it accurately, which I personally consider as normal for me. It is a novel for ages 12 and up, but sometimes I seriously ask myself how kids younger than me could ever grasp the meaning of the story. Although The Dark Side of Nowhere is a puzzle to decipher for me, I think that it's a great interpretation of the average teenager's adolescence.

Amazing, suspensfull Thriller!!!!!!

This story is about Jason, a boy who is captivated by the death of his best and closest friend Ethan, who supposedly died of a burst appendix . He and Paula, his girlfriend, investigate this mysterious case. They go to Old town house where surprises await for the two kids. After they went there many clues appeared before them like the killing of two local boys in the town and when suddenly the school janitor approaches Jason and tells him that he has gotten this surprise from him. Afterward he and his friend Paula tried to find the mystery of the missing people but they can't because someone is trying to prevent them from finding the clues that will automatically lead them to this case. The school janitor approaches Jason again, and he gives him this magical glove which can fire pellets when you tense any of your fingers. He then tells Jason to go to Old Town where he himself would be waiting for him. When he arrives there he sees the school janitor among many other children in the camp. Mystically the other children in the camp were exactly the same children that went to their church. This really creeps Jason out and then he sees that all of them had gloves like the ones he had and he gets worried about this whole case.
He tells his parents about what happened and then his parents started to get freaked out at the whole case. They told Jason the truth about everything, what had happended to them before Jason had even been born. Jason freaks out and he doesnt know what to do. He tells Paula the breath taking secret... he was an alien!!!!!!
She couldn't believe what had just come out of Jason's mouth, she was petrified. He then told her that the aliens were going to rule the planet. she got terrified and stopped seeing Jason. Will Jason and his fellow aliens conquer the Earth and make the earth people leave????
Neil Shusterman really exceeded his way of writing in this novel, he puts a bit of him in every page of this book. When you have finished reading a chapter you feel like if you want to read more more more and more. I would really recommend this book to people of all ages because it is a wonderful thriller filled with a magical touch that penetrates you into this book.

Percy, Salty and more!

This small Thomas book contains 3 stories. The first is about Percy's misadventures during a water shortage. He tries to stay clean but ends up the dirtiest he's probably ever been after an accident that involves sweet, gooey chocolate.

The second story is "Salty's Secret" and it tells about how Salty interacts with those troublesome trucks. Hint: "Yo ho ho and a bucket of prawns, the tiller spins and the captain yawns." (Sorry, non-Thomas lovers, but all we mums of Thomas-fanatics know these stories well, don't we!)

The final story relates how Percy and Harold became friends-- though at first it seems as if just the opposite is about to happen as Harold starts to take the mail delivery over from the stranded Percy.

The mysteries being written for children are a tad easy to figure out and the language is a bit too jolly for me. Nearly every other sentence uttered by one of the Five Find Outers contains an "I say--" which is as bad as the Hardy Boy's over use of "golly." Nonetheless, a very enjoyable read.

I wanted to own the whole set of the Fve Find Outers since childhood. This item came last and now I have the complete set(Golly!!!!!!!)though it is a mix of paperbacks hardcovers and three in ones. The book looks a bit old but very good quality for a used book. Love it and now reading.

About the Author

Wil Wheaton may be one of the most unusual celebrities of our time. Born into stardom with the movie "Stand By Me", and then growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Wil was in the spotlight nearly his entire childhood. Not just for Star Trek fans

If you wish you could be a famous actor like Wil Wheaton, after reading this book you might understand that being a famous actor is not all cracked up to be. This is a guy who has had a hit movie and a hit TV show. Not many actors can claim one of each, and yet, he suffers the life of a "has been" and doesn't enjoy the riches we all think famous actors of hit stuff enjoy for a lifetime.

This guy has impressed me with his brutally honest autobiography. The people and industry he speaks of are the people you and I are likely to have heard of. It's the kind of stuff that could get you kicked out of Hollywood for good.

Why would anyone want to read an autobio about a guy on a couple of hit shows who is a blogger? I can't answer that, but I can tell ya it is great reading. The people who would like this book are geeks, bloggers, Star Trek fans, famous people fans, actor wanna-bes, parents with step-kids, and Shatner haters.

Despite his being celebrity, he's a guy who faces problems many of us do. Financial, a difficult ex who is no help with the kids, balancing a career and family, and finding the right job.

His writing style is candid, conversational and comes across like a friend who is talking to you. Since he and I are parents, must mention that he uses a few cuss words. If you like his blog writings, you'll like this book - without question. However, if you've read every blog entry he has done, you've read most of this book. Furthermore, if you've read Dancing Barefoot, you've caught about a chapter's worth of this book.

Trek fans, don't expect an entire book on his life as Wesley. Wheaton, the actor fans, don't expect an entire book about acting although it covers a bit. WWdN, you're getting exactly what you see in his blog.

He might be famous and a hotshot blogger, but he has lived through many things you and I have, too. That's what makes the book a delight. This review may sound like one from a groupie, but my responsibility is to readers not to Wheaton. My only disappointment was "re-reading" the "Saga of Spongebob Vegaspants" since this was already covered in Dancing Barefoot.

Even Non-Trekkies Will Warm to Wil

Although Wil draws on his experiences during and after Star Trek for this book, it's not a celebrity memoir or similiar plea for attention. Just a Geek is a real-world story of one guy's struggles to be a good person/husband/father/actor/blogger/geek -- basically what we all deal with to some degree or another -- but funnier than heck. Wil Wheaton has great comic timing and a refreshing willingness to poke fun at himself and his mistakes.
And even though Trek isn't all this book is about, if you've ever attended a SF convention or watched Trekkies read this book for a glimpse of the actor's lives behind the scenes.
I never bother to get writers to sign their books, but if I ever get the chance to meet Wil, I'll ask him to sign my copy. Brilliant stuff.

Not what you would expect

This book is a frank, straight up look into Wil Wheatons life and transformation from actor, to writer (and believe me there is a lot that happens in between that transformation). I highly recommend this book, whether you are a Star Trek fan or not, its a book about simply being a loving, caring, individual.
