Philip Rideout has been a fanatic of real-time graphics programming for over a decade. He has held positions at several pioneering graphics companies, including Intergraph, 3Dlabs, and NVIDIA. Throws out the basics

The title 'iPhone 3D Programming' is misleading. This book is focused on cross-platform development in C++, which is cool but makes the title of the book incidental and mostly a marketing gimmick. Yes, you're using Xcode and running your apps on iOS devices, but the real goal is cross-platform development using OpenGL ES via a set of C++ classes.

It feels like the author basically had this work lying around and ported it to the iPhone, then wrote chapters to share with us.

Nowhere are the core frameworks reused or integrated with OpenGL in interesting or creative ways, and a lot of useful frameworks are tossed to the wayside in favor of wrapper C++ classes. It shows the author's inexperience with the platform.

The actual OpenGL meat is tasty here, but the iPhone integration is pointless and very novice.

Great book, projects work on iPad!

This book has the best description on how to get a project going on the iPhone that I have read so far. No nonsense straight and to the point to get you started and then gets you up to speed quickly with OpenGL ES. I wish I had this when I started making iPhone apps.

I like how the author's design takes advantage of portability using a C++ engine. This allows for a project to be ported to other platforms fairly easily. The example projects support all current forms of the iPhone (OpenGL 1.1 and 2.0) and I also have the demo projects working quite easily on the iPad by following the directions stated but with an iPad project instead of an iPhone project.

If you are looking to create a game or interactive application on the iPhone or the iPad, this is the book you want.

Excellent intro to OpenGL, has little to do with iPhone, however!

I bought the book thinking it would help me jump start in OpenGL. It certainly does but not in the way I was expecting. Each new example in the book starts by removing all the generated resources that Xcode creates for you when you choose an OpenGL ES project! As a developer with over 20 years of Objective-C behind my belt, this is highly counter-intuitive. I want to write OpenGL apps on the iPhone, not write a portable renderer in C++. I'm not planning to port any app to any other platform anytime soon. So, in addition of learning OpenGL, I now have to become closely familiar with C++, which I don't have any desire to do. One step at a time, please!

So, if you're planning to write an OpenGL app that you want to port to multiple platforms, already know C++ quite a bit, and optionally want to have your app working on the iPhone, that book is for you. Otherwise, do like me and look somewhere else.

Smiley lovingly creates an idyllic world of family farm life in Iowa in 1979: the neat yard, freshly painted house, clean clothes on the line, and fertile, well-tended fields. The owner of these well-managed acres is Larry Cook, who abruptly decides to turn the farm over to his two eldest daughters and their husbands. Ginny and Ty are hard-working farmers who try to placate her ornery father, while sister Rose and hard-drinking Pete try to stand up to him. Dark secrets surface after the property transfer, and the family's careful world unravels with a grim inevitability reminiscent of Smiley's splendid novella Good Will . Not to be missed. Not for the squeamish reader

I am a college student, and as a logical step after readingKing Lear in my literary analysis class, we then turned our focus on Athousand Acres. I can't say how glad I am that this book fell across my path. Throughout my book my opinions about the characters changed so often, that I didn't know who to trust and who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. I came in with the expectation that Larry and Caroline would be the heroes, and that even though Ginny was the narrator we would clearly realize that she is evil. However, the characterization in this book is so deep and intricate that it is nearly impossible to lable one character as truly evil, except for the surprising conclusion of Larry Cook, whom I hated with a passion. However, this book can not be read with the expectation that it will give the reader pleasure. Instead, it reaches into the very depths of your emotions and twists them around with so vigorous a hand that you are nearly sickened by some of the action in the story. This book has some of the greatest depth I have ever known in a novel, and incorporates many subjects and undertones into its plot.

The characters were covered in gray dust...

Reading this was like walking down a curvy dirt road in farm country. It shrunk down to a dirt track and then disappeared into nothing. There was no passion in the story. The characters were one dimensional and covered in gray dust. I read it in its entirety hoping the end would be better than the beginning. I finished the book because I like to complete something I start. This was disappointing from beginning to end.

The grudging bonds of family and loyalty are at the core of A Thousand Acres. It is told in the first-person through Ginny, one of the three Cook sisters who is in constant contact with her sister Rose and her drunken and abusive father Larry. The third sister, Caroline, is the odd woman out, and was able to get her education and find her way out of this lion's den. The story is about Larry bequeathing his farm to Ginny and Rose, the series of events that makes him regret his decision and effort to have it revoked, and the new awakening that this causes the women to have about themselves and their relationship to one another. As a novel it works well; the plot is intriguing, moves at a reasonable pace, and is told with a common vernacular that has moments here and there of a mature and rare perception. The women have a somewhat unfortunate, but altogether realistic relationship, and like all of us have their good and their bad moments. All in all this is a well-told story, one that you may not want to revisit later down the road but that you're satisfied with once it's over.

What an amazing cookbook

I've been a vegetarian for 16 years and this may be the best all-around cookbook I have ever owned.

The food is very tasty, looks nice, and is easy-to-prepare. I particularly love the Croustade of Asparagus and Cashew Nut Korma and can't wait to try the Spicy Bean Cakes and Crispy Nut Balls Coated in Polenta.

Vegetarian Supercook can help you make many delicious soups, main meals, breakfasts, appetizers and desserts. In addition to the classic dishes, it also offers recipes for some Indian, Italian and Asian meals. Even non-veggies think the food is delicious.

At the top of each recipe are bullets that state preparation time, cooking time and how many people it serves. It may sound obvious, but it's great having the prep/cooking time breakdown - especially if you're a person whose day is scheduled to the minute.

It's also beautiful to flip through. The pictures of the food are so vibrant and colorful they they practically leap off the page. In fact, my one "complaint" would be that not every recipe has a photograph to accompany it - though the vast majority of them do.

Another nice aspect is that every so often the author adds a tip beneath the recipe. For example, "For a lighter version, use half coconut milk and half water, which is better value than buying 'light' coconut milk when you're simply paying for the water - read the ingredients on the label!"

Vegetarian Supercook is also great for those who are dairy-free as more than one third of the book's recipes are vegan (though non-vegans won't feel even slightly deprived). There's even a chart on the next-to-last page that lists substitutions to make more of the recipes work for you.

But regardless of whether you're vegetarian, vegan or a carnivore looking for a way to add some healthier food to your diet, Rose Elliot will not let you down.

Love this cookbook!

This cookbook is really terrific! I have a large collection of cookbooks and by far this is one that I use many recipes out of. I highly recommend it! Whether or not you are a vegetarian, the food is great and easy to prepare. Her recipes are easy to follow and the color pictures in the book are bright and colorful!
