Catherine the Great might be causally known as a cruel dictator with lots of lovers, but author Vincent shows how the Empress of Russia actually took on her position (well, after she had her husband murdered) with some good intentions. Smart, unafraid, and well read, Catherine wanted to use the ideas of the Enlightenment to uplift Russia and its citizens. While able to make some improvements, palace intrigue as well as Catherine’s own personality brought out her iron will. Young readers will find the manipulation of Catherine’s early days particularly interesting. One of the best things about this series is the care that has been taken with the design and format. From the eye-catching covers to the solid maps and historical engravings and illustrations (all made to look of a piece, even though they may be from different sources), the books have pick-me-up appeal. Overall a great book: it's written in an easy going way, just the right balance between being sexy, factual and relaxed.
The explanations on the anatomy sections and the illustrations could I think do with some "beefing up". I read them a couple of times and still couldn't fully make sense of it all.

It was horrible and non descriptive. The marketer for this book is a liar. I was so disappointed and sad. The review of the book is a untrue. So sad it does not do what it says it does and the writer of the book is no descriptive. Do not waste your money.

Great Resource for All Quickbook Users

As a CPA who has had experience working with various accounting software products but, at the time, new to Quickbooks, I found this book to be a fantatic step-by-step guide to setup your company file, lists and items with detailed instructions and insider tips. This book effectively conveys the sometimes technical language and processes of accounting in a way that allows users to understand some of the "behind the scenes" things in Quickbooks and, more importantly, how to best utilize the software. For those who are more advanced Quickbooks users, there are chapters about running specific, detailed reports to customizing Quickbooks to your business. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to get more out of their Quickbooks accounting software.

For over 20,000 companies, Icon Group International uses a proprietary methodology to generate international benchmarks and measure gaps that might be revealed from such an exercise. First, for a given company Icon Group searches across over 26,000 firms for others producing similar products, offering similar services, or are in the same stage of the value chain for a particular industrial classification. We then collect the financials for each of these firms and standardize these into comparable categories (assets, liabilities, income and ratios). Though we heavily rely on historical performance, the figures reported in this report are not historical but are forecasts and projections for the coming fiscal year. The forecasts are updated quarterly. This particular report was updated in the last quarter. In order to maintain comparability over time and across companies and countries, we use an index system. In the case of a firm's assets, we treat the total assets as equaling 100, irrespective of the value of the local currency. All other assets are then calculated as a percent from total assets. In this way, the structure of the firm's assets can be easily interpreted and compared with international benchmarks. For liabilities, total liabilities and equity are indexed to equal to 100. For the income statement, total revenue is indexed to equal 100, and all other figures are calculated as a percent of these figures. Ratios are projected using raw financial statistics and, as ratios, are therefore comparable. The source(s) for the various raw statistics include public filings, corporate releases, and various other data sources.

Given a company's financial structure, the resulting figures are benchmarked across "leading competitors". In choosing the leading competitors, Icon Group chooses only those firms with sound financial situations or those not undergoing radical restructuring, or where random volatility, mergers, or bankruptcy affects financial performance.

Since the calculation of competitors' benchmarks proceeds in a similar fashion, but are aggregated across all competitors, one can directly conduct a financial gap analysis. Here, Icon Group graphically reports, for each part of the financial statement, the larger gaps that the firm has vis-à-vis the leading competitors. A gap need not be a bad sign. Rather, it is simply a substantial difference that might merit further attention or signal a firm's relative strength or weakness for the coming fiscal year. Again, all figures are projections, so due caution is required.

About the Author

Modern updates?

I cannot encourage teachers, librarians and parents enough to add Enid Blyton and especially this series to their shelves. Great bedtime read-aloud, excellent introduction to listening to chapter books.

Note to owners of older copies, this new version has been altered. I was slightly shocked when my copy arrived. The names of the children were different than in my old used copies of the first two stories! Bessie is Beth, Fannie is Frannie, Dick is Rick and Jo is Joe. It's not a big deal and I just say the old British version as I read aloud, but I wish I'd known that it had been revised. I also suspect that some words were 'updated', but it's not terribly noticable. I'm just glad another Blyton book is back in print!

My sister and I read this book as children,and really enjoyed it. It is the kind of humour and happenings that children love. I have tried for years to get a copy, but now it is finally being reprinted. I can't believe my good fortune!It is also a favourite of my own children. I will definately be buying several copies. Enid Blyton is the best!

I first came across this magical book when I was seven. My two sisters and I are now in our 50s and 60s. We have never forgotten the magic of The Folk of the Faraway Tree. I read this to my son when he was a little boy and broke into tears at the end when the tree sighs," wisha, wisha, wisha". The book contains characters like Dame Slap and her horrible school, Connie's gollywog ice cream cone because spoiled Connie just HAD to dream up some kind of ice cream that the magic land at the top of the tree didn't have. The tree stuck it's towering top through different lands in the clouds. Those lands were only there for a while, then moved on to be replaced by some other land. Some lands were scary, some were fun, all the lands were tricky and the children had to be careful to avoid getting caught when the land moved on or they wouldn't get home again from the Magic Woods. Also, beloved were Moonface and Saucepan, Dame Washalot and other characters who lived in the gigantic tree. Also, loved the tree's ability to grow different kinds of fruit on different branches. What a great book.
