Proulx has followed Postcards , her story of a family and their farm, with an extraordinary second novel of another family and the sea. The fulcrum is Quoyle, a patient, self-deprecating, oversized hack writer who, following the deaths of nasty parents and a succubus of a wife, moves with his two daughters and straight-thinking aunt back to the ancestral manse in Killick-Claw, a Newfoundland harbor town of no great distinction. There, Quoyle finds a job writing about car crashes and the shipping news for The Gammy Bird , a local paper kept afloat largely by reports of sexual abuse cases and comical typographical errors. Killick-Claw may not be perfect, but it is a stable enough community for Quoyle and Co. to recover from the terrors of their past lives. Why didn't i know about Annie Proulx until now? I finished The Shipping News last week and immediately ordered Postcards which I am reading now. (2016). Annie Proulx is an amazing writer - after a few pages you adapt to her writing style - the characters become real as you learn more and more about them throughout the book. I knew almost nothing about Newfoundland until reading this book and actually googled a map of Canada to see where it is. Despite the bleak weather, economy and customs I cared about the people in the book who choose to live there. Ms. Proulx'' descriptions of their hard lives in the inhospitable environment is amazing. 6 stars.

One of Annie's best!
This is a delightful story of finding home and friendship. The characterizations are spot on. Often funny, in a dry way. Makes me yearn for Newfoundland.
Check out Proulx's other books - they're wonderful. Refreshingly well written; beautiful small islands in a sea of "Best Seller" mediocrity

A Superb Novel!

Now that we can edit our Amazon reviews, here is an update on the novel The SHIPPING NEWS, which I first reviewed on February 27, 2000. Today, I want to add that the book, a mid-life story, is most suitable for readers over the age of thirty-five or forty. It is the reader with life experience who will best empathize with the main character's plight and, therefore, find the story irresistable.
THE SHIPPING NEWS by E.Annie Proulx (1993) is one of the finest novels I have ever read. Proulx's unique writing style serves up the utterly compelling story of one man's (Quoyle) odyssey from lackluster career, depression, and despair into a brighter tomorrow where success, self-esteem, and love finally becken in mid-life. This sometimes dark, literary journey, written in a remarkable style that paints vivid word images, will immerse the reader into every emotion!
As the story progresses, Quoyle and his tiny family move from the U.S. to an old family home, in need of TLC, located in Newfoundland (where the author has lived, by the way). It is a distinctive, historic house, anchored to rocks by great chains that defend against ocean winds and storms! Quoyle goes to work in a reporting job with the local newspaper called THE SHIPPING NEWS. Readers will enjoy Proulx's realistic word portrait of Newfoundland landscapes and culture. The author expertly reveals Newfoundland life via wonderful, believable characters and settings as Quoyle makes various contacts throughout the community in pursuit of the latest disaster story! You see, it is his job to cover all of the bad news: accidents, fires, deaths, and so forth! OF course, a couple of mysteries occur along the way.
Surprises occur in every twist and turn of this stunning work. Always central is Quoyle and his determination to take care of his small family by succeeding in a new culture. Certainly, only a superior writer could present Quoyle's tale in such magical passages. No wonder this novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994! Quoyle's life journey reminds us that every person has worth and that truly great stories arise out of everyday circumstances!
This novel is detailed, somewhat dark, somewhat naturalistic, but, most of all, it is reassuring in it's humanity. I recommend it to those willing to be fully immersed in the story to the very end!
A note to those who like to speed their way through novels: the first three or four chapters necessarily inform the reader about the main character's eccentric personality and predicaments. Then the story takes off as the family moves to New Foundland.
I have not yet seen the movie that was made of this novel because I have read the novel twice! I can only say that I am sorry the film, THE SHIPPING NEWS, wasn't better received. Some books are harder to translate into films than others. Often, reading the book first is essential to understanding the movie. For example, another such book/movie was DUNE. Though the DUNE movie was actually well-done on a number of levels, it's complexity was better understood if the viewer had read the book first!
Even if you did not like the movie, do read THE SHIPPING NEWS by E. Annie Proulx, when you get the chance! I highly recommend it!

Grade 4-8-Presented by the St. Charles Players, this is an example of radio theatre at its finest. The narration moves the abbreviated story along at a brisk, easy-to-follow pace, while the highly polished troupe of actors offers a colorful array of voices and British dialectsAfrom Cockney low-lives to privileged members of the aristocracy. Sound effects and music add spark to the production. Although this version is only about one-third the length of the original, both the story line and the picture of British social conditions and injustices during Dickens's time come through vividly as young Oliver makes his way from the desolation of a workhouse for orphans to Fagin's den of thieves in London and, finally, to the comfort and security of life with an honorable gentleman. As such, it is bound to whet the appetites of upper elementary and middle school youngsters who will be intrigued into reading the original. It also offers, through drama, an enjoyable way of understanding history and should stimulate lively discussions on the relationship between dire poverty and a life of crime.

Oliver Twist was Dickens's second novel and one of his darkest, dealing with burglary, kidnapping, child abuse, prostitution, and murder. Alongside this gallery of horrors are the corrupt and incompetent institutions of 19th-century England set up to address social problems and instead making them worse. The author's moral indignation drives the creation of some of his most memorably grotesque characters: squirming, vile Fagin; brutal Bill Sykes; the brooding, sickly Monks; and Bumble, the pompous and incorrigibly dense beadle. Clearly, a reading of this work must carry the author's passionate narrative voice while being flexible and broad enough to define the wide range of character voices suggested by the text. John Wells's capable but bland reading only suggests the rich possibilities of the material. Restraint and Dickens simply don't go together. The abridgment deftly and seamlessly manages to deliver all major characters and plot lines, but there are many superior audiobook versions of this material, both abridged and unabridged. Not recommended.

Gotta read it.

The best. A must-read classic. The story has total grip, and makes a nice introduction to the later genre of social protest fiction. Lots of well drawn characters and beautifully delineated descriptions of down and out London in the early 19th century. My only carping complaint is the difficulty in following the backstory revelations that come in at the end of the book. They're supposed to be the astonishing and heart-rending secrets which explain hidden mysteries in the story. I found them a tangle. I have to go back and read that part again.
But I still say you don't want to go through life without having read this.

Loved this story...so well written. Fast-paced and so descriptive of the environs and characters of the times. Dickens introduces so many characters yet keeps them all straight in the story and our minds and ties up all the loose ends at the very end of the story....I love that!

A difficult book to read.

A difficult book to read but worth the effort. Many old school colloquialisms that originated in England are hard to understand. If I hadn't read the book on a Kindle where I was able to look up the biggest majority of the words, I probably would not have given three stars.

A Very Substantial History Of Posters Up To The 1960's

The book "Posters" by Bevis Hillier is a history of posters that begins with conjectures about the origins of the poster and traces the development of posters through the 1960's. (The book has a copyright date of 1969.) This is not a mere picture book. The text of the book is its most important feature. Bevis Hillier concentrates on the artistic and cultural aspects of posters. He gives biographical details about many prominent poster artists. He mentions developments in printing processes but does not treat that subject with much technical detail. There are a plentiful number of illustrations including many full page posters. Most are in black and white. I count 31 that are in color, so the book isn't drab.

I have the "Second impression 1974" hardcover edition of this book. The binding doesn't look very durable. If you order a used copy, I suggest that you get one in good condition.

I rate this book as four stars out of five to indicate that it is an excellent written history of posters, up to the 1960's.

Don't Bother

This really wasn't worth it, I bough the book after I had read the first book in this series. I read a review of the second comic and it said that it wasn't worth it either and I am glad that I didn't waste any more money. The book was so, so, so cheesy!! This is such a let down compaired to the great first book in the series. Read the summary on wikipedia and don't waste the money here.

It's finally arrived...the final part of the AVALON HIGH CORONATION trilogy. HUNTER'S MOON is volume three in this Manga series.

Ellie has to finally convince her boyfriend, Will, that he is indeed the reincarnation of the infamous King Arthur. The Homecoming Dance is just around the corner, and if Ellie can't get him to believe in himself by 10pm that night, all is lost, at least according to the Order of the Bear, the sworn protectors of the prophecy.

Morgan, a rival for Homecoming Queen, is out to sabotage Ellie however she can. And in the background, Will's brother, Marcus, is still a threat. But Ellie can't be concerned with either of those things. Her sole purpose is to make Will believe.

As the clock counts down, Avalon High's football team struggles to conquer their rivals the Barbarians. And Ellie doesn't feel comfortable in the dress that Jennifer has picked out for her to wear as part of the Homecoming Court.

HUNTER'S MOON concludes the series nicely. I don't want to give away all the drama and action that ensues - that would spoil all the fun! But as with the previous two Manga books in this series, the illustrations are lavish. The plot moves quickly, and is easy to follow along. The romance is sweet and appropriate for all ages.

For any fan of Meg Cabot, this will surely please. And for fans of Manga, they too will be spellbound until the final page and the resolution of the prophecy.

In this, the third book in the Avalon High trilogy, Ellie is intent on reuniting her boyfriend Will with his family and convincing to accept his destiny as a reincarnated King Arthur.

She's also running for Homecoming Queen.

I loved the novel that this trilogy is based on (Avalon High), but these manga (what is plural for manga?) don't quite do it for me. Even three books can't capture the original, and the drawings reduce the characters to caricatures. The books don't seem to be very popular in my classroom either, so I'm not sure that they work as a bridge to the novels. If could be, however, that manga just isn't the right form for me.

I was a little disappointed that most of the cakes in this book require fondant. The cakes are cute but I was hoping to decorate without fondant.

Great ideas

I sent this book to my sister-in-law a year ago and she has already worked her way through 6 of these cakes without any difficulty at all. My neice and nephew have picked out their cakes for the next 6 years of birthdays and special days and it has become an almost monthy event to sit and talk about future events and plans.
