Top ten of everything 2008

We use this book when we have family over for dinner. It engages everyone.
I ask the ? and then each person that wants to participate answers. The rule is that each person responds and then the correct answer is given.

If you choose to follow this format, it allows each person, no matter what age or intelligence, to give their response. Then when the caller gives the correct answer people immediately reflect on their own response first; then they think about whether they were correct. Believe it or not all this happens quickly (in my experience). There is not usually a focus on who was right or wrong. It may take some time to get participants used to the idea of going around the table before hearing whether their answer was correct.

Children, probably, benefit from this approach the most, however; this approach allows everyone to save face.

Students LOVE this!

This is a wonderful addition to our school library's reference section that also includes The Guinness Book of Records. I can hand this to a bored and fidgeting sophomore knowing that he will not surface from it until the bell rings. That is high praise indeed. This compendium of lists is fun, interesting, arresting, and always has something to linger over. It ends up all over the library. Please, more goodies like this!!!

Fun Teen Book

Ellie Anderson is the main character. Her best friend is Sarah Wilkins.

I like these books mostly for the fun, cozy relationships and the fun times the teens have.

Ellie has a job after school at the library, shelving books. She meets an interesting guy named Brian. A young girl was murdered two years ago. Ellie has visions pertaining to this girl. She is determined to solved the mystery of the murder with her visions. Part of the mystery is what does Brian, if anything, have to do with the murder? And what about Brett? These questions are answered in this book.

Ellie Anderson has visions of things that happened in the past and things that will happen in the future. Ellie thought her visions were really cool, until they meddled with her love life. Ellie promises herself that her new life in Shadyside will not be ruined by visions. But Ellie's promise is broken when her visions lead her to a dead body in the Fear Street Woods. Now she must find the murderer before he finds her first.
When I finished reading this book, all I could say was 'Wow.' It was a fantastic Fear Street book! It had several different genres. Horror, mystery, suspense, romance, and adveenture. Let's not forget the surprise ending. That was shocking. Out of all of the main characters in the book, it was that guy. You'll never be able to guess it.

I think the mind reader is a real good book because it keeps you geussing on who did it and how did they do that. What I like about the book the most is that the main character. Ellie deals with stuff that every day people whould do just not finding the bodys and have visons but some people do have visons. I could read this book 1,000 times and I bet if you read it once you would read it again. so if I were you I would read it.

About the Author

Lindsey Fallow has spent the past decade exploring science and technology as a writer, software developer, and television personality. Following an undergraduate degree in Manufacturing Engineering, she fronted a science show for 8-12 year-olds on Disney, and went on to become a reporter & Associate Producer for Tomorrow's World (the BBC's #1 prime-time UK science and technology show) from 1998-2002. She's stood on the top of the Golden Gate bridge, fed sharks, filmed brain surgery, flown in military planes, and been bitten by a baby tiger, but is the most excited by far when her 13-year-old stepson 'gets' his homework.

Dawn Griffiths started life as a mathematician at a top UK university. She was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics, and was offered a university scholarship to undertake a PhD studying particularly rare breeds of differential equations. She moved away from academia when she realized that people would stop talking to her at parties, and went on to pursue a career in software development instead. She currently combines IT consultancy with writing and mathematics.

When Dawn's not working on Head First books, you'll find her honing her Tai Chi skills, making bobbin lace or cooking nice meals. She hasn't yet mastered the art of doing all three at the same time.

A quick note from one of the authors

Just to pick up on the previous review, the reviewer is correct that this book isn't focussed on geometry proofs in the formal sense.

Instead, it aims to be a stepping stone for learners, moving them across that big scary jump between simply learning formulas and plugging your numbers in, and creating formal geometry proofs.

In Head First 2D Geometry, the learner - not the author - creates the formulas that they need to solve challenging problems. By going through the process of discovering those formulas for themselves we believe learners develop a deeper and more confident understanding of how geometry works, putting them in the right place to move on to formal proofs.

If you're one of those students who didn't struggle until you hit geometry proofs, this book should help you over that hurdle. If you were already confused by the time you hit 'Pi' or if you're new to circle formulas, quads and polygons then Head First 2D Geometry is waiting to be your guide. If you need geometry to apply to your programming or design work, you're our learner too.

Like all Head First books, this is a book that will help you to think differently, and targets your brain rather than focussing directly on your exam grade. This book is not about proofs

Since the average student of geometry is having problems performing the proofs which make up the largest portion of any geometry course, I'd say that most high school and college geometry students will not get that much out of this book. Most geometry students easily grasp how to make geometric calculations, what they can't do is formally prove why those calculations are correct.

However, if you are a technician and you need to learn how to solve problems using geometry and think geometrically, this is a very good book, and that is why I give it five stars. The table of contents are:

Chapter 1. Finding Missing Angles
Chapter 2. Similarity and Congruence
Chapter 3. The Pythagorean Theorem
Chapter 4. Triangle Properties
Chapter 5. Circles
Chapter 6. Quadrilaterals
Chapter 7. Regular Polygons

O'Reilly plans to publish a similar practitioner's book on 3D geometry and eventually print still another Head First book on those who need to learn how to perform proofs in geometry.

If you've never seen the Head First series of books before, they are completely different from conventional textbooks. They use pictures, fake interview sessions, Q&A sessions, and even crossword puzzles to help you understand concepts. They'll even set you down the wrong path to solving a problem just to help you remember the right path better. This approach works particularly well for something as visual as geometry. Highly recommended for the practitioner and technician, but not the student of geometric proofs.

captured my son's attention

With honors geometry coming up in school this Fall, I had my son work through 2D Geometry over the summer break. Of course, he thought the idea of having to to do schoolwork over summer break was indication that he had been born of a Nazi father. However, once he caught the idea that this was going to happen, and that I'd be checking over his work each week, he gave the book a chance.

And once he did, he was thoroughly engaged. Instead of a formal, class-like approach, the book showed him how human being get their brains to work solving problems... and oh, by the way, you learn some geometry principles as well.

Each chapter's project connected him to something real, something he could imagine. Then, with very little prompting from me (mostly about showing his work line by line), he was off. The pacing was very accessible for him, the explanations both thorough and clear, and the visual layout appealing enough that the summer became HIS project, not mine.

I'd recommend this treatment of geometry without hesitation.
