A good free version of As You Like It

My appreciation for Shakespearean comedies have increased with age. I liked "As You Like It" - it made for a good comedy and a good introduction for someone to Shakespeare.

The Kindle version is pretty much flawless - it's copied from a good source and doesn't have any glaring transcription errors as some free e-books do.

If you want a good introduction to Shakespeare, or even just want to branch out from his dramatic plays - give it a try. It's a free book - what can go wrong?

One of the most entertaining of Shakespeare's comedies.

As with all of Shakespeare, the concept of love at first sight is given far too much credit, but other than that, this is a delightful romp filled with much amusement. The language is as beautiful as one expects in Shakespeare, but is somewhat less difficult for the modern reader to follow than in some of his plays; I found myself being more distracted than helped by most of the footnotes. As with most Shakespearean comedies, it was easy to see that this play was intended for the amusement of the common people; the similarities in style between the plot here and in much modern pop culture were striking (the sexual innuendo to be had when a woman passes for a man and finds another woman falling in love with her, for instance). If it had a flaw, it was that the ending was just a little TOO pat and contrived, even for a comedy, but that's just a minor quibble.

Both the 1963 and the 1965 publications are identical in content and contain 294 pages, a significant increase from the previous 208 page 1960 printing. With a total of 294 pages, the revised and expanded 4th UK edition is the most comprehensive of all of the 'Tuning for Speed' editions ever published. Earlier editions only stretched to 208 pages and later editions shrunk to 260 pages (or less) as what was thought to be 'dated information' was deleted from the contents. This 'dated information' is considered valuable today by those enthusiasts interested in vintage motorcycle tuning and modification. Consequently, this makes the revised 4th UK publication the most complete and desirable edition. Therefore, it is our pleasure to offer this reprint of the Floyd Clymer 'Revised 4th UK Edition or Second American Edition of 'Tuning for Speed' to motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide. 'Tuning for Speed' was originally published in 1948 and continuously reprinted and updated in order to keep pace with the constantly evolving range of British motorcycles and engines. While the primary focus of this publication is on 1965 and prior British motorcycles, the theory and engineering it contains is still applicable to the current crop of high revving imports. 'Tuning for Speed' is considered by many knowledgeable motorcycle enthusiasts to be one of the best books ever written on how to improve, modify and fine tune a motorcycle engine and it is often referred to as one of the 'top 10' classic motorcycle books. The Floyd Clymer association with this publication dates back to the early 1960's when he purchased the United States Publishing rights for 'Tuning for Speed' from Temple Press in the UK and, in 1967, Clymer published the 1st American edition of that title. However, by 1967, the Clymer publication had been preceded by 8 printings of the UK edition and was incorrectly identified by Clymer as a 9th edition. In fact, the 1967 Clymer publication is actually a reprint of the less desirable 208 page 1960 UK edition. However, in 1963, the 4th UK edition was revised and expanded to 294 pages (with a second identical re-print in 1965). Therefore, this 2nd American edition of the Floyd Clymer publication of 'Tuning for Speed' includes all of that valuable 'dated information' that was deleted from the later editions and is identical in all respects to the 294 page1963/1965 revised and expanded 4th UK edition - with the exception that 7 pages of UK-based advertising to the rear of the book are not included in the Clymer publication.

Great bathroom or bus commute reading for programming beginners

I have read programming books for years. There was a time when I could write a "Hello World" program in each of seven or eight languages. That time has passed, mainly because I haven't been intimately involved in any specific software project for many years. Still, I have this habit of reading programming books and enjoying them, perhaps in the hope or expectation that one of these days I'll find myself with a project in front of me, time to work on it, and motivation to learn a new language or tool to make the project's vision a reality. Well, here's the newest book of programming foundational tips that I have read.

97 Things Every Programmer Should Know is a collection of short, two page essays, each by an experienced programmer. The book is a collection of tips and tricks for writing code that works, that is maintainable both by the author and by others, and that will best fit the situation. While the book doesn't measure up to some of my all time favorites in the genre like The Art of Unix Programming or The Pragmatic Programmer, it wasn't meant to. This is not an in depth guide to underlying philosophies of coding practices and standards, but quick hit and run articles that would be easy to fully grasp and absorb in short five minute bursts, such as during work or study breaks (which is how I read the book).

Some of the topics included in this book will seem obvious such as "Don't Ignore That Error" and "Comment Only What The Code Cannot Say," and some tips are going to serve only as reminders to best practices that are sometimes ignored (to our own peril) like "Check Your Code First Before Looking To Blame Others" and "Make Interfaces Easy To Use Correctly And Difficult To Use Incorrectly," there are some real gems in the book that aren't so obvious like one author's instruction to "Read the Humanities" because they are a great tool to help programmers learn to effectively interact with people and not just software and the advice that says "Don't Just Learn the Language, Understand Its Culture" so that you will write effectively and idiomatically within each language, rather than writing the same thing using different words.

I can't say that this is a must-have book for experienced programmers, but anyone at the novice to intermediate levels would certainly benefit from what the book contains. I've enjoyed reading it.

Abstract and aphoristic

If you're just entering the programming world, this collection of 2-page essays might be a useful resource. But if you've been reading programmer blogs for a while, or you've worked on a couple of projects, then there's little of value here. Very few of the essayists choose to tell stories; instead, they say things like "Remember that humans always make mistakes," "Read other people's code" and "Always leave the campground cleaner than you found it."

Speaking of which, where is the code? A book on programming without code is like a day without sunshine! To give one example: The second essay, "Apply Functional Programming Principles" by Edward Garson, assures you that you'll write cleaner, clearer code after working with a functional programming language, but his assurances feel awfully airy without any examples. Maybe this is inevitable in a book that's language-agnostic. Books like Code Complete and Clean Code are hopping with code samples (in C++ and Java, respectively); as a result, they do a far better job of engaging the reader and making abstract concepts stick.

A notable exception is "Code in the Language of the Domain" by Dan North, which uses code to illustrate a concept and uses it well. You might want to read that one, but you don't need to buy the book to do so: All of the essays in this book are Creative Commons-licensed and can be read on the book's official website.

Here is why Joel Spolsky's books are so good: He tells stories. He gives examples. He restrains himself from bombarding the reader with familiar aphorisms. You're imbibing his experiences, not just listening to him ramble. If you haven't already read Joel on Software and More Joel on Software, definitely do so. A Starting Point For Your Conversations

This book is a compilation of short essays ranging on topics as diverse as Bugs, Error Handling, Customers, Refactoring, and Expertise. The purpose of the short essay is not to answer all your questions or be a definitive guide to programming. Rather the purpose is to provide a starting point for a conversation. To this end, I think a practical way to use this book whether in academia or a development team would be to assign groups of essays to be read ahead of time to stimulate classroom or team meeting discussions. Wait - there's more! A series that improves with time!

I've always been fond of the Magic Tree House series as these were the books that made my son a reader! However, after dozens of books, my son started to get tired of the same series and showed no interest in reading the last several books.

Inspite of this, I had to buy this book when I saw the cover - a Sea Serpent - that had to be intriguing! Dreaded mom that I am - I made my son read this book! He protested for about one minute - and then he was hooked!

While the first 20 books or so of the series are for younger readers, the last ones have "grown" and appeal to the 9 - 12 year old range. Full of adventure - this series just keeps getting better!

If your child thinks they've outgrown this series - pick up a copy of this book - you never know - they may just find themselves hooked once again on the magical adventures of Jack and Annie!

Good Read

This book contains all three elements deemed essential for a good fantasy story: magic, mythology, and medeival setting. Additionally, the story concerns two likable characters that kids easily relate to. This book is not rated in the top 200 Amazon sellers for nothing, so apparently a lot of other readers have enjoyed it. For magical fun and adventure, I highly recommend "Summer of the Sea Serpent" for readers aged 9-12.

Summer of the Sea Serpent is magnificent and all over stupendous. This story is sort of scary and adventurous at the same time. This is when Jack and Annie need to get the sword of light for Merlin. An excellent gift for kids

This clear and easy to understand biography of Elie Wiesel is aperfect introduction of Holocaust literature for kids. It's especiallyimportant since many of the survivors are passing away and there is always the looming threat of forgetting this crime against humanity. I would recommend this book for kids 10 and over -any discussion of the horrors might be a bit too extreme for any younger children. Elie's courage and joy de vivre are a lesson for everyone, not just the children.
