Thorough reference! Easy to read and follow.
By Jon Schipp "Keisterstash"
Clear, concise, with lots of examples. It is well organized; read cover-to-cover.
For both exams, book is split into two parts, one for each exam. Practice questions and a practice exam included in each part.
If you have a few years experience with Linux you can probably skim most of it and still benefit enough to pass the exam. I picked up a few things, here and there that I didn't know or had forgotten.
If you are new to Linux and want to get the LPIC-1, the nutshell book, in my opinion, isn't going to provide enough information to fully grasp all the areas in the exam. You could, however, pass the exam by studying this book with little or no prior knowledge of Linux.
I recommend practicing the examples for retention.
This book could also be used as a good starter for taking up the Linux command-line.

Not crazy about the organization
By Christopher G. Loverich
This item is probably best suited for someone with extensive familiarity with everything covered, perhaps to serve as a relatively quick review and to ensure that you're familiar with the necessary material. I went in with this understanding, despite being more of a beginner to linux, but thought it might serve as a reference / staging point for learning about essential parts of the OS. It did not meet my expectation in this regard, and I've found myself more satisfied with (the more extensive) Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux, A (3rd Edition). Supposedly all of his books are as good as this one, though I can't speak for the others personally.

very condensed bunch of useful gems
By a_bob_a
I also used LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide: (Exams 101 & 102) and LPIC-1/CompTIA Linux+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide. Nutshell provided a way to review the salient points without all the window dressing. "Just the facts mam." And it also touched on a few things not in the other books that did show up on my exams. Well worth it as an adjunct to the other two or, I imagine, if you're already skilled with Linux its an excellent reminder of the things you need to keep in mind going into the exams.
