Grade 4-7 Direct writing marks this collective biography, written for a younger audience than Beard's The Presidents in American History (Messner, 1985). Sullivan provides three- to four-page individual summaries of the Presidents' lives, illustrated with portraits of the Presidents and reproductions that illuminate the times in which they lived. These profiles are accompanied by lists of biographical facts and key events during each administration. They are preceded by an overview of the electoral process today and the President's duties; this section is divided by frequent subheadings that help make the information more easily retrievable. The text is set in a large typeface, and much white space gives the book a clean look that browsers will find attractive. Sullivan does not go into as much detail as Beard, and he does not address the Cabinet other than to cite its current make-up, but the information he includes is factual and appropriate for report writing. Pretty good beginners' guide

As a recent immigrant to the USA I thought it might be useful for me to learn some of the things that all American children learn in school... after all, if I didn't know the difference between John Adams and John Quincy Adams, I might make a fool of myself. This book is clearly laid out, giving more or less equal space to each president, regardless of their length of term and achievements. This does leave you feeling a bit short-changed when it comes to those such as Lincoln, for whom whole books could be written, but then you have to remember thatisn't the point of this book. Its point is to give an overview of EVERY president, and because of this, the author George Sullivan ensures that all holders of that office are recognised. Even those who are normally forgottenm such as John Tyler are brought to life as people as well as presidents, with short biographies of all of the men concerned.
An interesting set of facts is also included. For example, the seemingly over-deferential "Mr President" is in fact the correct mode of address to the holder of that office. NO president is allowed to serve more than two terms (although one have served four before the rules changed), presidents always change over on the 20th January every four or eight years, and every president has to be born in the USA.
This is a good book, useful for children and adults and is interesting as well as informative.

MR. PRESIDENT is a short book perfect for anyone who wants to know the basics of how one becomes president, as well as some good information on the 44 we've had so far (yes, that includes Barack Obama!).
For this type of book, Mr. Sullivan did a very good job, giving information in an easy-to-understand way. It's a fast read that gives more insight into major events through certain President's careers, fun facts about different Heads of State, and even sheds some light on certain "unknown" presidents that might not come up much.
As for the fun facts, you'll find out who the tallest and shortest presidents were, who had the most eccentric pets in the White House, and even who the first woman to run for president was (hint: It's not Hillary Clinton!).
Overall, I think this is a really well-written resource book that's great for middle school readers learning Presidential history, or even someone older who wants to brush up on their facts!
