This book is an updated version of older theory. The theory has been revised and is now better in the sence that it is more flexible and nuanced. The pictures are somewhat more modern and the makeup is not hideous like before. The texts is precise and gives good insight to the theory. This book is what I expected and hoped I would get.

Not for everyone

I have followed (generally) the Color Me Beautiful concept since the early 80s, and have understood the expanded seasons concept, along with the "dominant" idea implemented by the more recent Colour Me Beautiful books. This book lost me. While I understand the need to include more examples of different skin tones, I think the basic concepts are getting muddled. For instance, there is no clear explanation of why they type Mel B as a warm, but Mary J. Blige as a Soft. It also feels like some types have been crammed together that shouldn't be. Carole Jackson talked about how her "olive" skintone (admittedly a hard tone to define) made her a winter that needed deeper or brighter blue-based shades, but in this book she, and a bunch of others, would be in the Deep 1 category, which doesn't include these cool tones. Those are saved for the Deep 3s, who have the deepest skintones. The only type that mentions grey hair is Cool 1, but that is reserved for grey haired women with blue eyes and pink skintones. Not exactly all-encompassing. I do think this book may be helpful for non-caucasian women, but I don't fit that category. The "capsule wardrobe" suggestions are helpful, but everything that isn't a color issue appears to be recycled. That is why I gave it 2 stars.
