ROSE IN BLOOM
By Gale Finlayson
MacBride has written several books as sequels to Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved Little House series--featuring her only daughter as the smart and sassy protagonist. Having exhausted the education which Mansfield, MO has to offer, 16-year-old Rose travels alone by train down to Crowley, LA, to spend an academic year attending a real high school in 1903. She is the cherished house guest of her aunt Eliza Jane (Wilder) Thayer. There, near the banks of the bayou, Rose learns valuable life lessons outside the classroom, as well as with her class of 7 selected scholars taught by Professor Stover.

As Rose grows to love and admire her feisty aunt EJ, she
is exposed to newfangled inventions like electricity and the telephone, over which she almost gets in trouble along with her young cousin, Wilder. Her academic challenge is to learn Latin from scratch, in order to achieve her goal of Valedictorian. She makes friends with Odile, a sweet girl who introduces her to an entirely new culture (Acadian French), and even acquires a beau who offers her a chaste and charming courtship.

But it is in the realm of social progress that her eyes are opened as she helps EJ campaign for women's suffrage and workingman's rights. Undaunted Rose also faces serious challenges from the male establishment and Southern prejudice against Blacks. At 17 Rose knew that her encounter with Eugene Debs, founder of the Social Democratic Party, would have a lasting effect on her mind and her life. Despite the plotting limitations of biography this YA book proves an entertaining and enlightening read. A good introduction to American studies of Social Reform.

Got a Lot from this Book
By A Customer
This is definitely one of my fave books(i'm 14). I think I first read this book when I was 9 or 10, but I wasn't mature enough to really get all of it yet. Rose is definitly growing up, separating from her mother, making good and bad friends, falling in love, taking big risks and thinking about her future. Frankly she is dying to ditch her boring, ordinary life in her small Ozarks town, but she also has to decide what she is going to do about Paul, her first love, who is gone most of the time. Basically it is a coming-of-age story set in small-town turn-of-the-century America. I liked it especially for the historical value, and would recommend it to anyone who liked the Laura books, or likes historical fiction for young adults. ...
