It's a one trick pony, but what a trick!

I've made three or four recipes in this book, and they've all been delicious. However, almost all of the entree recipes (haven't tried the side dishes or desserts yet) follow the same pattern:

1) Brown your meat, whatever it is.
2) Put the meat in the slow cooker, and put a sliced onion in the frying pan you used for browning your meat.
3) Fry the onion until golden.
4) Add about 1-3 cups of your liquid of choice (beer, wine, meat stock, cola) and place seasonings into the liquid. If there's vegetables in the recipe, add them too.
5) Bring the mixture to a boil.
6) Add the mixture to the slow cooker.
7) Cook (usually on low) for the requisite number of hours.

The results are always moist and tasty. The spicing recommended in the book seems a bit bland for my taste, but that can always be tinkered with. The pictures of the finished product are reasonably accurate, attractive, and inspiring.

Overall, I recommend this book highly to any cook familiar with a slow cooker; novices might find it a bit daunting, as each recipe requires a fair amount of advance preparation (as noted above).

Fantastic value for money

Although titled 200 slow cooker recipes there are actually 104 main recipes the others which make up the 200 are slight variations often changing one ingredient however still fantastic value for money. It is a small book 5 ½" by 6 ½ "with the picture of the completed dish on the right hand page and instructions on the left hand page. As well as the instructions section there 5 other main sections giving recipes for; Breakfasts & Light Bites; Meat, Poultry & Game; Fish & Seafood; Vegetables; Deserts, Drinks & Preserves: What more could you want.
There is a useful instruction section explaining hints and tips on using a slow cooker and mentions that all recipes are for 3.5 litre (6 pint) slow cookers but it does explain how to vary the ingredients for the other two sizes of slow cookers.
It is as well to follow the recipes in detail at the first attempt, we did not use vegetable suet to make dumplings on the first attempt and these were well underdone.(Cidered Pork with Sage Dumplings) the only one we had any problems with, we have not tried them all, was the Beef and Root Vegetable Hotpot; The instructions said press the potatoes into the stock and the picture does show them on the top of the dish however this resulted in the potatoes being undercooked. Unless the liquid is above the level of the potatoes they do not cook properly. However this worked well with sweet potatoes in the Rancheros Pie which also asked for them to be sliced and placed on top.

Good recipes, but not a crock pot book

I cook regularly with a crock pot and was given this book as a gift. It was fantastic to have recipes to get me out of my normal rut. However, the recipes were obviously not designed for or tested in a crock pot. As noted in an above review, there is a great deal of preparation before putting the ingredients into the pot which is totally unnecessary. Also, too much liquid is added.

I recently made the Moussaka recipe in the book. They had me brown the lamb before placing it in the crock pot which is totally proper, but then wanted me to also fry the thinly sliced eggplant which would cook it, then put everything in the pot and cook for 7 hours before putting the uncooked egg topping in. Why would I cook already cooked ingredients for 8 hours? Better to let the spices mellow while the other food is cooking. Not doing extensive prep first is the whole point of a crock pot.

Additionally, it calls for one cup of broth which is totally unnecessary and will lead to soupy dishes. I made this dish without the extra broth or cooking the eggplant and it came out perfectly (though I think I'll throw in some fennel next time).

I would not recommend this book for a crock pot beginner. I am still giving this book 2 stars because although the author clearly did a poor job adapting these recipes to a crock pot, I really enjoyed the recipes once I adjust them for the slow cooker. And it's a good looking pretty book.
